MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin's proposed statewide smoking ban hasn't caught fire in the Legislature just yet, but it is about to get its first vote.

The ban backed by Gov. Jim Doyle is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday in a Senate committee. It is expected to advance, but from there its future becomes more cloudy.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker has said he won't schedule the bill for debate until a compromise can be reached with those who want taverns exempted from the ban. As written, the ban would apply to all taverns, restaurants and working places in the state.

Republican Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch hasn't said whether he will support the ban.

OK, what is it going to be now, the smoking police going to come to bars and check for smokers!!!! Give me a break!!! And for the peolpe who don't smoke, stay out of the bars and STOP WHINING!!!!!!
Maybe we should give the vote to the PEOPLE not the legislature, this is the land of freedom of choice right? Our government is getting way to invloved with taking rights away from the people instead of for the people!!!
Stand up and lets all be heard!!!

I stopped going to clubs and bars mainly because afterwards I *felt* like I'd smoked three packs of cigarettes. I don't smoke and I look forward to having a night out with friends and not stinking like an ashtray or being burned on the dancefloor or while trying to get a drink at the bar!

I am an EX smoker. We are the worst with complaining about smokers and the smoke in the space we are at! If you as a non smoker don't like the smoke, don't go to the place. There are other places that carry the same product that does not have smoking.

Look we all know that they are going to pass this stupid law, falling in line like a gaggle of cloned Eichmanns. Then we will have one more law in this state that people will disobey and one more reason for disrespect of the law.

You are not allowed to smoke within ten feet of the border of the state of California and if you are caught you forced to spend a night on the streets of San Francisco.

I also agree that it should be the business owner's choice to have smoking or non-smoking. Why aren't there any non-smoking bars? That would be an idea for a business owner to start. I like to go to bars to have a drink with friends. I don't smoke and that's a choice I have made. The smoke doesn't really bother me. If it did I would go to a resturant/bar that was non-smoking. I would also work at a place that was non-smoking. I really don't see an end to the government ban. Soon they will ban smoking in your own cars. Since the government owns the streets that you drive your car on. It's really out of hand. Why don't they tax alcohol more? It causes health problems just as much as smoking does. We all know the health risks with everything we do. Why does the government feel that they have to make the choices for us?

Let's outlaw drinking and smoking and driving too fast. We can all put on cute little pink sundresses and have a tea party in the back yard.

not everyone in a bar is there for social reasons. I work 2 nights a week bartending (in addition to my full time job and school) and I'm SO excited for a smoking ban! Many states have similar laws and their bars and restaurants have not boarded their windows. I look forward to the day when I can go to a job that I truly enjoy and not have to worry about the headache I'll have the next day from congestion. I know I could work somewhere else, but I'm good at what I do and I make very good money. Times are changing and a non-smoking world is inevitable... gone are the days of seatbeltless cars and babies riding on their mothers laps. BECAUSE IT ISN'T SAFE. Niether is polluting the air for everyone around you, trying to enjoy a night out or a nice dinner, or just make a living.

I'm all for a statewide smoking ban, but I also believe that some businesses should be allowed to choose whether or not they allow smoking. I think people are educated enough now about the dangers of smoking to make the decision whether or not to be in places where smoking is allowed. In the past we non-smokers didn't have any choice because smoking was allowed everywhere. I don't go to bars in Janesville because of the smoke, but that's my choice. Some people don't mind it, and that's their choice. A statewide ban on smoking would improve the health of the general public, but I can also see why businesses are worried about losing customers. I've never understood why smokers can't go an hour or 2 without a cigarette, like when eating dinner, but I guess that's what addiction can do to a person.

I don't understand why the government has to mingle in a person's business. If the business owner wants to allow smoking than that should be hi/her choice as a business owner not the government's. If they want to ban smoking from businesses then they should give businesses taxbreaks.
