MADISON, Wis. (AP) - State officials are investigating whether Social Security numbers were visible on an informational brochure sent to Medicaid and BadgerCare recipients.

Jane Marvin says that she recently received the brochure which included her Social Security number on the label.

Marvin says she was also one of the 170,000 state taxpayers who received a tax form with her Social Security number displayed in the winter of 2006. State officials spent about $600,00 to provide credit monitoring for those affected by the 2006 mistake.

Marvin says state officials should have learned from the incident that happened in 2006.

Department of Health and Family Services spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says they're looking into the matter and doesn't have a number on how many recipients might be affected.

The mailing is titled, Wisconsin Medicaid and BadgerCare recipient update.'' The eleven page brochure is the January 2008 edition.

How can anyone take any aspect of government seriously anymore?

When will state government take privacy seriously? Are they understaffed, do they contract out without sufficient oversight? Not that I'd wish this on anyone, but if one of our lawmakers had an ID theft, perhaps greater attention would be paid to this issue.
