Did wolf migrate to Oshkosh area?
OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) – A gray wolf may have migrated to Winnebago County in eastern Wisconsin – a spot the animals are not usually sighted.
Officials are waiting for a genetic test to tell them whether an animal killed by a bow hunter southwest of Oshkosh last month was a wolf or a wolf-dog mix.
"We typically don’t have wolves in Winnebago County," said Jason Higgins, a Department of Natural Resources conservation warden. "And that’s part of the reason why we ordered the tests. It’s outside of the realm of where wolves reside."
Higgins said he’s seen the animal, and it looked like a wolf to him.
Federal officials removed the gray wolf from endangered lists in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in March. But, the state can still fine hunters or a court can revoke a their hunting, fishing and trapping privileges for up to three years for killing a wolf, Higgins said.
No citations have been issued yet for the animal killed in December, he said. The hunter who shot it told officials he initially thought it was a coyote.
