Hixson offers tax credit to reduce brain drain
A local lawmaker hopes a state income tax credit on student loan interest will provide incentive for students to stay in Wisconsin.
Representative Kim Hixson is coauthoring the bill with Eau Claire Democrat Jeff Smith. Legislators on both sides of the aisle are signing on as cosponsors. Hixson says the tax credit would apply to interest on loans used for tuition, books, room and board and supplies.
He says the amount of the tax credit is yet to be determined.

If he was sincere about getting this done, he would have introduced it before the waning days of the legislative session.

Referring to kinsohn comments,
I'm not sure how kinsohn's comment has anything to do with the subject.
Hixson and Jeff Smith are trying to create an incentive to stay in this
state.
Also, you can go to other states for less taxes. But you will be paying
for services in many other ways. Check out other states fees if you think Wisconsin's are high.

To localmatters:
If you still have interest payments to make on your 90's college loans, then yeah I'd think you're still eligible. (At least according to my reading of it at http://www.legis.state.wi.us/assembly/as....)

Hmmm...a tax credit. Perhaps our "brainiacs" wouldn't be in such a hurry to leave the state if they could get in to UW Madison as easily as those who visit from other states to attend and then leave after graduation.

Any chance of getting this retroactive to say....the early to mid 90's? :)

If Democrats were really interested in keeping productive people in Wisconsin, they'd stop spending like drunken sailors and raising taxes every time they get a chance. You have no idea how high taxes are in Wisconsin until you move out. Token tax credits are an attempt to dress up a pig.
