Reaction to Dreyfus death
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Governor Doyle has ordered U.S. and Wisconsin flags to be flown at half staff at all state properties and military installations to honor the passing of Lee Sherman Dreyfus.
The 81-year-old former Republican governor passed away at his Waukesha home last night.
Doyle says benefited from Dreyfus' advice over the years. He says the former governor showed that politics don't have to be harsh or overly partisan.
Former aide Bill Kraus says Dreyfus had suffered from heart and breathing problems and never fully got his breath back after several operations.
Tom Loftus served as Democratic majority leader in the Assembly during Dreyfus' term. Loftus says Dreyfus wasn't much interested in political maneuvering and probably didn't seek another term for governor because of the politics. Dreyfus was elected in 1978 and served one term.
Dreyfus' son, Lee Junior, says the family gathered at the Dreyfus home for Christmas and his father was able to spend time with his children and grandchildren. Lee Junior says with that occurring, it's his sense that his father was ready.''
