State's motorists will pay more
UNDATED (AP) - Wisconsin motorists will pay more this year in fees.
It'll cost 20 dollars more to register your car. Titling it will cost an additional $24.50.
Getting or renewing a driver's license will cost $10 more.
The fee increases in the New Year are expected to generate about $217 million more over the next 18 months. Most of that revenue will be used for road work.
A 30 percent increase in registration fees for heavy trucks is expected to raise another $57 million.
The higher fees were included in the state budget bill.

I don't think we'll ever have tolls in good ol' 'wisco'. I believe I read somewhere that the tourist industry is afraid that our friends to the south will go somewhere else if we have tolls. Many of those people that own those tourist traps, esp in the Dells, winter in Fl or Az. Must be nice.

I did not intend to mislead. As I have never lived in Illinois and was not born when the Illinois state tollway system was started I was just trying to answer the best I could. As I understand Illinois took out loans to build parts of the Inerstate system instead fo taking federal money from the Federal-Aid Highway Act for them. In doing so they put up the tolls to pay off the loans. If I am wrong I am sorry.

by saying the state of illinois turned down federal funding to "pay for the interstate system," 'greenst' is being misleading at best.
the state of illinois has received hundreds of millions to help fund both state and interstate roads.
what they have turned down is federal help to fund the day to day operations of the Illinois tollway and the current tollway reconstruction/expansion project. By doing so, they can make lots more by exacting tolls from all of us $592 Million in 2005.(Illinois still gets millions of federal highway dollars for non-tollway road projects. Not all interstate roads in Illinois are toll roads. )

In Indiana, they go by your last name to license your vehicles. So every April, I pay over $1100 for my three cars.

Ill. tolls are because Ill. turned down Fed. money to pay for the interstate system. Now I know what I say next will not go over good but it just my thoughts. Like everyone else do not want to pay any more taxes then I have too but, I have no problem paying for our state services. It is foolish to think the state can maintain servises without tax increase at some point. Everything that has gone up in costs to run our own homes has also gone up for the state. If fees do not increse then services will have to decrease. Just like what happened to the DMV. Budget cuts took away alot of DMV jobs now it takes longer then ever to take your test or get what you need. We all know how great Ill. roads are do we want our roads to be like that. Or we could be like Iowa where half of them are gravel. It could always be worse. By no way am I letting the state off the hook they still waste money. They need to stop building things untill they can maintain what they have.

I thought most Illinois tollways were part of the interstate system, which would be funded by Fed money. So, making a toll out of WI's part of the interstate shouldn't matter who funded it? I don't get it???

Boy, I sure wish my salary would increase every year as much as inflation does!! How is the average person supposed to make ends meet?!! This state/country is going downhill fast. Pretty soon there will be no "middle class." Only "super rich" and "super poor!"

""I wonder if tolling has been considered by the state?""
Most of the highways that run through Wisconsin were at least partially paid for by Federal Highway funds so the state can't change them to toll roads. Now you could make a toll road out of E Court Street between Main and Milwaukee if you wanted to :)

I am glad that the state finally got around to raising registration rates. I always have way too much money left over after paying all of the various taxes and would have no idea what to do with it or how to spend it wisely. Thank you Oh Great Governor Doyle for taking all I have and then asking for more.

Boy, it sure is nice that our Gov. is sticking to his pledge not to further burden Wisconsin families with more taxes. Oh well, no matter, I'm sure this will be long forgotten by the time he goes for re-election, at least that's what he's counting on.

How frustrating. I was blown away in December when I received in the mail my auto's re-registration paperwork and fee requirement. What a jump in fees! I also am annoyed that I have to pay to travel Illinois highways, but Illinois residents travel freely through our state on a regular basis. I wonder if tolling has been considered by the state?

I second that one fedup!!! I see more Illinoians traveling in Wisconsin....kinda nice they get that free ride through our state as they travel, shop, own second homes, and work here. I appreciate their tax dollars (if they own property here) - but heck....lets put some tollways up like they have so that others traveling here can help maintain our roadways. I'm being "fee'd" and taxed to death in this great state that I love.

It would also be nice if there was some equity between the states - how lovely that Wisconsinites get to pay 1.oo to 1.60 to use Illinois roads as well as pay the fee increases in Wisconsin while Illinoisans pay nothing in Wisconsin. Sign me FedupFreddy - fed up with politicians, government, taxes, the whole system is broken. I'd like to see in a few years just how much of the revenue generated by the fee increases actually goes to improve our roads and how much lines the pockets of government officials and workers.

It would be real nice if that would show "New Improvements" for roads.. I travel pretty much on State and Interstate Highways, and Some (if not Most) travel like you are riding n a "Buck Board" and Horse....I Tease my family that we need to go back to that, But I didn't know that the State was actually following through with it !!!!
