WAUSAU, Wis., (AP) - The state Department of Transportation says 739 people died in traffic crashes on Wisconsin roads and highways in 2007.

That's up slightly from a year ago when crashes killed 712 people but still significantly below the five-year average of 788 fatalities.

According to preliminary reports, the deaths last year included 111 motorcycle riders, or 18 more than in 2006.

The fewest traffic fatalities in Wisconsin in modern times occurred in 1992, with 645 deaths.

So far, 2008 is off to a much safer start than 2007. The Transportation Department reports there has been one traffic fatality as of Wednesday morning, compared with seven at the same time a year ago.

I wonder how many of those deaths could have been avoided with seat belts/helmets?
