Assembly to take up Republican compromise on virtual schools
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Republican lawmakers are offering Governor Jim Doyle a compromise on a bill that would keep virtual schools open in Wisconsin. It includes an enrollment cap and would require a study of the Internet learning option.
The Assembly is due to take up the measure today.
Lawmakers have been trying to come up with legislation that would keep virtual schools open after a court ruling invalidated them. The state Senate passed a bill last week, but Republicans who control the Assembly object to its freeze on enrollment for two years.
They propose capping enrollment at one percent of all public school students, which would be about 8,700 youngsters. Siblings would be exempt from the cap.
There now are about 3,500 children in virtual schools.
