Couple gets to keep cash
James and Colleen Mesler, the Janesville couple who in December found a bundle of cash in their refrigerator, get to keep the thousands they found—if the rightful owner does not come forward to claim the money by Tuesday, March 11.
Janesville police informed the Meslers and the media Tuesday afternoon that their investigation showed the money was not stolen or linked to illegal drug sales.
“The money has been determined to be ‘found property’ and subject to applicable state finder statutes. The money has been returned to the bank,” police said in a press release.
The Meslers published a notice Dec. 11 that they had found the money. The rightful owner has 90 days from such a published notice to claim his or her property.

Wait wait wait, I can prove that it's my money! Hold the investigation, I really can tell you everything about that money thing. See the fridge is one that has doors on it, and I put the money in it so that it wouldn't spoil, yeah that's right. The money itself is very distintive, it is green and it has watermarks on it, yeah that is it, and 6" x 2 1/2" right? Also I can prove that it is mine because I know something that nobody else knows about the money........it has all these numbers on it;) HEHEHE, and now all the past owners will step forward and claim that the money is theirs, I hope that Meslers get to keep the money, CONGRATULATIONS!!

doc0430, you have your info wrong about that elderly lady that was shot in Green county. She knew the woman that did it. It had nothing to do with the Gazette reporting about her prior to her murder. I was in the jury selection for that trial. ;o)

Ummm, I just went to pay my bills and discovered my money was missing. The last time I remember seeing it was when I was loading that old fridge up to take to goodwill, I must have set it down while I was replacing the bottom tray that fell off... It must be my money...off I go to the PD. I can see it now....the lame lame's are going to come out of the wood work. I sure hope they publish the bogus claim stories in the gazette...now that would make for some interesting reading.

OK glad the finders get to keep the money. Janesville police informed the Meslers and the media Tuesday afternoon that their investigation showed the money was not stolen or linked to illegal drug sales. Then they must know who the money belongs to. Reminds me of a joke I heard Larry the cable guy say the other day. Why when you go to a phycic do they ask you what your name is. And do you think a drug dealer is going to say it belongs to me. Wonder if the Janesville police ever found my stolden bike.

doc, don't you think it's likely they'll put the money in the bank? Or do you think they'll hide it under the refrigerator? ;)
If publishing their names and details puts people at so much risk why don't we have more dead lottery winners?
Personally I'm glad that the money will be their's. It sounded like they could really use it. While I still think it's likely derived from drug sales it's nice to know that some good will come of it.

Now we just have to hope that this isn't A case were the drug dealers didn't just wait till they (the Meslers)got the money back thinking it would be easier to get it from them than the police........ Seeing as how their name and all the details were given when this happened. I sure hope that nothing happens like what happened when the paper reported on the elderly woman with all that cash was found sleeping at Big Lots, she ended up dead in the woods after someone got that information, even thou the killer or killers were caught she still is dead because of something that was given too much detail in the press.
