Lawmakers consider psychological exams for police
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A bill that would require pyschological testing for police officers in Wisconsin is getting a lukewarm reception from a legislative committee.
The bill comes in response to last fall's mass shooting in Crandon. Tyler Peterson, an off-duty police officer, killed six people with his SWAT assault rifle before killing himself.
Peterson never had to undergo psychological testing. The victims' families are demanding mandatory testing for all police.
State Rep. Daniel LeMahieu, R-Cascade, a member of the Assembly Corrections and Courts Committee, says he doesn't think psychological testing would have prevented Peterson's rampage. He notes Peterson was off-duty when he opened fire.

wisconsinheat..you are absolutely right when you say lying ,cheating ,stealing etc.. is wrong weather it be in Law enforcement or any workplace. My point is that the media and those that have dealt with proper Justice and proper Law Enforcement were there because of an err is the system. Well that just isn't the case. What problem there may be ,in The Justice System or in Law Enforcement, that is an extremely small drop in the bucket.

mcs: You asked paisleysdaddy, "what is your definition of "bad cops?"
When he answered you replied; "You cite lying, cheating and stealing...if you check you'll find more of that in your workplace (any workplace),than in law enforcement. You've been watching way too much TV."
.
What differrence does it make if there is more of that in other workplaces? Does that make it any less of a problem when it is in law enforcement?
.
I would agree that fleeing is usually not about the officer. It's all about the offender not wanting to get caught.

While most police officers I have dealt with acted professionally, it is the bad situations that we remember. I have only a question. What kind of psychological evaluation would they or do they use? And how do they know it works? For example, I have heard of Porteus Maze. This has someone follow out a maze with a pencil but your not allowed to lift the pencil.

LJS64 I agree with you. A person can snap at anytime, but I would feel a bit better knowing that the ones with questionable sanity were not allowed to be officers AT ALL. The risks of "therapy cops" would be less. You know, guys or girls that become cops to deal with childhood issues. Like being bullied etc...with the mentality that now it's their time to be the bully. I respect all officers, and would never disrespect one, but there is proof that not all cops are good cops, but that is true with any profession you look deep enough into, but most people's profession doesn't involve guns and the law...

paisleysdaddy...You cite lying, cheating and stealing...if you check you'll find more of that in your workplace (any workplace),than in law enforcement. You've been watching way too much TV. As far as being afraid to stop for the police ,the only thing they're afraid of is what they're running for,no drivers license, revoked drivers license, warrent ..etc. But I will admit it makes for real good drama.

MCS - I would define 'bad cops' as the ones that give police a bad reputation by lying, cheating, stealing, etc. The guys who are at it for themselves and not the better of the communities. If people knew they could trust 99% of the officers they encounter, I think there would be a lot less people fleeing an officer and making matters worse due to a cocky officer.

I think it's crazy that it took an off-duty police officer to kill six people before the State considered making this the law

Do you really think one psychological evaluation will stop something like this from happening again?? Get real. This individual "snapped", period. No testing, no interviewing would be able to predict this unfortunate outcome.

Well paisleysdaddy what is your definition of "bad cops". Those that act contrary to popular opinion for being attacked both verbally and physically. Perhaps the full population should have these test. Anyway as sb703 stated ,the majority of Federal,State, county and municipal departments now require some form of psych.test and evaluations

I guess until this news flash, I assumed that they would do this automatically. I guess I once again fell into the "assume" game. ANyway, if they perform psych tests on American Idol contestants, a person would only hope they would do the same to a person who serves the public in many more stressful situations than being told you can't sing. Boy, I sure hope this becomes a given. Cops are human, and the human brain can be funny sometimes.....

I believe that most municipal police departments already require psych exams for their officers. It is currently not mandated by the state, however.

I don't see why they have not been required to do these already. To be come a Correctional Officer or Deputy for Rock County you must undergo a psych eval and test.

Great idea. Maybe this will rid of some of the 'bad cops' out there and restore the 'protect and serve' motto back into that line of work.
