MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The first in what's expected to be millions of dollars worth of attack ads came this week in the state Supreme Court race.

The first television ad is from liberal issues group the Greater Wisconsin Committee. It goes after Burnett County Circuit Judge Michael Gableman. He's running against Supreme Court Justice Louis Butler for a 10-year term on the high court.

The new ad questions the appropriateness of Gableman's appointment to the bench in 2002, which came after he donated money to then-Gov. Scott McCallum, a Republican.

The ad also points out that Gableman initially didn't apply for the opening before the May 2002 deadline, was not among the two finalists named by the governor's selection committee, and lived nearly 300 miles away.

The election is April 1.

What it really comes down to is that Gableman is vastly underqualified for the state's highest court. According to One Wisconsin, he's had 7 different jobs over the past 9 years. Do we really want somebody in our Wisconsin Supreme Court who can't even hold down a steady job? If not for his quid pro quo appointment by then Gov. McCallum to his current position and the position previous, he'd still be job hopping.
