Enrollment at technical colleges up, could be linked to economy
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The state's technical colleges are seeing a slight gain in students, which often happens when jobs become harder to find.
The biggest growth spurts in the last 30 years of Wisconsin technical college enrollment coincided with the job declines of the national economic recessions of 2001, 1991 and the early 1980s. It's still not clear if the nation is in a recession now, but enrollment at the state's 16 technical colleges is growing.
According to the latest estimates, the number of full-time equivalent students is up nearly 2 percent from last year. In the previous two years, annual counts fell.
If the economy is contracting, school officials say they expect to see an even bigger growth spurt.

How about also factoring in that the 4-year colleges are too expensive and people are using the tech and community colleges to get their general ed requirements out of the way at a cheaper school and then transfering.
