MADISON (AP) – With a winter storm expected to hit Wisconsin overnight, state emergency officials are asking residents to stay off the roads.

Wisconsin Emergency Management spokeswoman Lori Getter says motorists who absolutely have to drive should take precautions. For example, they should carry a cell phone, and also let family or friends know of their travel plans.

Other suggestions include carrying water and energy bars, as well as blankets.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of the state. The agency is cautioning that the warning could be escalated to a blizzard warning tomorrow as wind gusts could approach 30 mph.

Counties across southeastern Wisconsin are expected to receive anywhere from five inches to a foot of snow overnight.

Looks like the snow and blizzard is going to be mostly rain. At one point, Madison TV was predicting 12-14 inches of snow along the WI/IL border, now it looks more like 1-2 inches, later this evening. It's amazing how far off these forecasts can be.
