DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - A gunman reportedly opened fire Thursday at Northern Illinois University, sending students fleeing from a lecture hall on campus, students said.
University officials warned students to get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear,'' according to a message posted on the school's Web site at 3:20 p.m.Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity.''
The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle said there were injuries, citing information heard over a police scanner shortly after 3 p.m. The scanner alerted police about a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.
Messages were left for university police and police in DeKalb, located about 65 miles west of Chicago.

dvlwmn13; "Daughter calls cop, cop tells daughter to obey her mother."
.
If you are a "social worker", then you know it is not quite that simple, although it SHOULD be.
.
The more likely scenario is: Mom slaps daughter...daughter tells school counselor...school counselor calls social services...social services calls police...police and social worker interview kid at school...police and social worker pay visit to mom and dad at home...social worker and police officer counsel mom and dad on acceptable methods of discipline...(if no bruising or other visible marks..in which case mom is arrested)...permanent record on file for future reference when daughter calls again..............

Miyata- I understand your frustration and I remember all the whips I got as a kid. But in our time there were parents who decided not to hit their kids....so not all kids where getting it at home. Sure it was more previlant back then, but it wasn't in every home. Today it is not illegal to hit your kid, it is illegal to hit them in excess. For example: 13 yr old daught tells mom to f off and mom slaps her in the face with an open hand. Daughter calls cop, cop tells daughter to obey her mother. Everyone is allowed to discipline their kid but within a certain range when it comes to physical and emotional ways. I am a social worker and firmly believe that spanking my child, when warranted, is completely ok. Some kids need a smack to put 2 and 2 together and realize they are misbehaving. I am not advocating child abuse I am simply saying within reason it is warranted from time to time, but to those people who beat the crap out a kid just because they had a bad day at work, I say step up to someone your own size and throw down. You will be less apt to fight with someone your size or bigger.

dvl, I know sometimes, no matter how hard the parent(s) try, some of these kids (originally was assuming the idiot was 22 or 23, not 27) still end up being losers like that. I'm more pissed off about government taking important tools in discipline away from parents.
When we got out of hand as kids in school the principal had carte blanche to whip our ass. Not only did we get it at school, we got it when we got home from mother and when dad got home we got it again.
Now we have 'medication' for every little 'condition' or 'syndrome'.
Just freaking frustrated.

While understand everyone's view on "blaming bad parenting", it always doesn't come down to that. You cannot change a persons chemical makeup and as hard as some parentstry to raise their kids right, there is just no hope. eing a parent is hard and a big responsibility but blaming it all on them is not the answer. Teenagers for example are very influential and hard to control. No matter how their parents have raised them there are certain things in this world that might turn them the other way. I feel that due to our society (two parent/single parent working household), children are forced to grow up way to quickly and taught rely on themselves and their instincts at a young age. This makes them think that they are "GROWN" before they really are.

Miya: I agree, not only have they stepped in and said we can't discipline our kids but our judicial system is a joke with criminals suing the victims because " I got hurt breaking into your home, etc..." and back in the day when they went to prison they had to get out and work on roadsides,etc... and now look at all they get to do while in there. (schooling, weight rooms, tv/movies to name a few)Maybe if there were harsher consequences for things they wouldn't be so apt to go out and commit crimes. I would like to share an example of our system. We had people vandalizing in our neighborhood and after they cut down our flag we installed cameras. At Christmas a few years ago we were hit by 3 kids. Caught it all on tape and at one time one kid looked directly at the camera so had a great picture of him. You know what they did about it? NOTHING! Why? Because we didn't know who they were it would be too hard to track them down is what they told us. So they did at least $300 worth of damage and having the camera didn't help us at all. Hello?? Don't you think if it were kids I knew they wouldn't be doing it in the first place? Another fine example: A different Christmas caught the kids in the act of trying to steal stuff, husband chased them (boy did they run and he said he could have caught the one but didn't touch him because we would have been in trouble for "touching a minor" even though he was stealing. When we called the police, they said it isn't considered attempted robbery unless they have a weapon. Geez who knows? Maybe they had a knive? They are just kids, bla, bla. I am sick of hearing it cause maybe if they cracked down more on them when they do the smaller stuff, then maybe they wouldn't move up to worse things!

Seabee, we got this way because parents cant be parents anymore. Cant spank, hell cant even give them a time out or take away their computer, video game or tv without some retarded child psychologist saying thats hurting Johnny's fragile little feelings. Kids are told they are all special and all are winners. When thes kids get older, they dont know how to handle losing and have to take it out on everybody else.
I dont blame tv, moves, video games, music for these things. I blame the idiot who does these things first, then the parents who dont get involved with their kids lives and finally the kiddie shrinks for getting it made illegal to give a kid a whoopin' when they need one.

Every time something like this happens I wonder how our society got to this point. Just a matter of time before the gun law people go nuts again. But still, this doesn't really surprise me. Our society has been glamourizing violence for decades. Movies, games, music. We tolerate it in others with no repercussions worth mentioning until they really go over the edge. It is safe to say I think, that this society has become accustomed to it. Add to that the media coverage and these idiots get this whole blaze of glory idea in their heads. 150 years ago this guy would have been dropped about half a second after he first pulled the trigger. We glorify it, perpetuate it, accept it, then cower in fear when it comes home to roost.

Illinois is one of the two remaining states with NO provision for the legal carrying of concealed weapons by civilians. "Lucky us", Wisconsin is the other state.

As far as the campus goes: "firearms. Students may not have or keep any firearm on their persons, in their quarters, or in their motor vehicles at any time while on university property except with the permission of the chief security officer of the university." from general regulations on http://catalog.niu.edu/content.php?catoi...

My cousin actually goes to NIU and was on campus, when I heard it on the radio I called my aunt and thankfully she was ok but she wasn't far from where the shooting was. They are starting to let students out of lockdown. These kind of situations are scary if your in them or know someone who is!!

It's a shame stuff like this happends. Probably another kid that has problems and has to kill other people to make himself feel better. What an idiot.
