JANESVILLE—A Janesville couple and their cats are safe after a fireplace fire left nearly $70,000 damages to their east side home.

During the fire, police also ticketed a Janesville man for driving over the main supply hose from the fire hydrant.

Janesville firefighters responded to the single-story, ranch-style house at 1009 Somerset Drive minutes before 1 a.m. today. After the fire was reported by homeowner Doug Schade, several motorists traveling on Interstate 90/39 also called in the fire after seeing flames shooting from the roof, said Bill Ruchti, shift commander at the Janesville Fire Department.

While firefighters were on scene—for 4 ½ hours—Janesville police provided traffic control and issued a $160.80 ticket to Patrick Krukowski, 24, of 2221 Hawthorne Ave., Janesville, for crossing a fire hose, said Lt. John Olsen.

Yes, displaced does mean that they are unable to live in their home. It does NOT mean that they are homeless. Maybe their parents/relatives/friends are lending their home to these people.

You folks are all very kind in your concern about evansville housewife, but I don't think that you need to worry. I think that she can take care of herself and make no mistake, I mean that as a compliment. She has demonstrated to me that she has adequate psychic defenses.

Excellent response, dini79. Thank God they all got out OK and hopefully have some sort of insurance. Things can be replaced. It's also very reassuring to know that concerned motorists took the time to call the fire in even though it wasn't "their problem."

It saddens me when people are so caught up in looking smarter than others (even though presumably we don't know who you are) that they will belittle a person who is trying to help others. There's a lot of that on these boards.
evansvillehousewife, you can call the Red Cross in Janesville to see if they have heard about the needs of this couple or others in similar situations. And thank you for caring.

DUH..."Fire DISPLACES Janesville couple and their cats" Last I checked, DISPLACE means they are not able to live in their home.

Are they homeless? Does this couple need aid or a temporary foster home for their kitties?
