Update on road conditions
From the Rock County Sheriff's Department:
Currently, traffic on I-39/90 and I-43 is moving at normal speeds. All other rural roadways have stretches of ice-covered pavement requiring reduced speed. Some roads had to be closed because of the drifting snow and vehicles stuck in the roadway. Overnight, officers have responded to several runoffs in rural areas due to slippery roads. Many vehicles were abandoned in the ditch and on the roadway. Occupants were given the option of staying with their vehicles or being transported to shelter by a deputy.
Deputies are currently working with DPW and the tow companies to reopen all roads. Winds are expected to dissipate throughout the day, but wind chills will still be dangerous. Icing will continue to be the biggest threat to travel. Anti icing agents are not effective in severe cold.
According to the National Weather Service, a combination of brisk winds and cold temperatures will be moving into Rock County this weekend. This will result in dangerously high wind chill values between 30 and 45 below zero. Additionally, Rock County is expected to receive 1-3 inches of new snow in the next 24 hours. Combined with those strong winds, the blowing and drifting snow will cause hazardous travel conditions for motorists. We anticipate some “white conditions” during this period in Rock County.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to be aware of these weather driving conditions for this weekend, and to make wise and appropriate decisions on their travel plans. We want all citizens to remain safe! Below are some additional safety traveling suggestions.
