Storm warning extended

The winter storm warning is now in effect until 8 p.m. this evening.

At 5:15 p.m., National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a band of intense snowfall along a line from Port Washington and Sheboygan, to West Bend and Menomonee Falls, to Oconomowoc and Hustisford, to near Fort Atkinson and Palmyra. Snowfall rates within this band are approaching 2 inches per hour.

Snow is beginning to wind down over southwest Wisconsin and snow should taper off to light snow or flurries around 8 pm.

Roads are impassable in Green County and the county has pulled plows off the roads. Snow plows will be pulled from Rock County roadways at 6 p.m.

The highest confirmed reports have been between 15 and 20 inches.

Expected snowfall totals by this evening will range from 6 to 8 inches in the Montello and Wisconsin Dells areas, but 14 to 18 inches southeast of a line from Darlington, to Madison, to Beaver Dam.

Several reports have averaged between 13 and 16 inches, especially in Rock, Green, Dane, northwest Jefferson, and southwest Dodge counties. Localized storm totals approaching two feet are possible.

In addition to the snow, strong north to northeast winds gusting up to 35 mph will continue to produce blizzard conditions at times, resulting in prolonged whiteouts. Snow drifts of 4 to 7 feet are likely and may be higher in exposed areas that favor drifting with north to northeast winds.

Travel will continue to be near impossible this evening and is strongly discouraged. If you must travel due to an emergency, take a winter storm survival kit with you and tell somebody when and where you will be traveling.

I remember that snowstorm in 78-79 as well. We have pictures of my sister and I standing on a snowbank in our neighborhood. We were higher than my dad's pickup. Once roads were getting cleared by the plows, we took a drive on a county road. The piles were so high that when the wind blew, the drifts blew over the top of the road and made snow tunnels to drive through. Since then, I remember one good storm in 90-91 when I was at UW-Platteville. We could not figure out which white lumps in the residence hall parking lots were our cars. The campus closed at 9:00 a.m. after some poor, dedicated souls tried to walk through knee and hip deep drifts to go to 8:00 a.m. classes. I've never seen so many college kids playing in the snow. My funniest memory was the frat houses attaching ropes to trash can lids and walking to the nearest liquor store to bring home as many cases as they could pull.

yep that is what I remember too in 78. I also remember that we had to have my dad take his riding snow thrower and plow from our driveway(in harmonyhills subdivision) out down to Bingham rd and out to hwy 26 and back again, just so we could get out and get to the grocery store. That is way back when I thought it was fun to have a ton of snow to play in. LOL Now I can't wait until it all goes away. I'll take 90* anyday over snow & ice.

This snow is nothing compared to what I remember as a kid. I remember a ice storm in 76 and a snow storm in 78 when I had a whole week off of school.

Is this the worst storm you have ever seen? It is for me, other than an ice storm, and I am in my 50s.
