Rock County issues weather warning

The Rock County Sheriff's Department is encouraging people not to travel. It's also encouraging any non-essential businesses to close in order to get more people off the roads.

Morning commutes Thursday morning may be impossible in some areas, a sheriff's department news release suggests.

East-west roads are drifting shut, and deputies' ability to respond is limited because of the large volume of calls for service, the department reports.

"Patrol officers in and around Rock County are now reporting that highways, roads and streets in Rock County are extremely very snowy, ice covered and slippery," according to a news release.

Winds are creating white-out conditions and high drifts throughout the county, making travel "nearly impossible," the release says.

"These conditions will worsen as we extend into the evening and early morning hours, making commutes impossible in some areas," the release says. "The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to stay home and off the roadways, for their safety. Currently, several roads in the County are closed or entirely impassible."

Please, people, stay off the roads. Also, if you have to get home, stick to the plowed roads. It may sound selfish, but when you take a shortcut down my street (or others) and get stuck, it is our streets that don't get plowed because they are narrow and the snowplow can't get through when cars are stuck and blocking the way. We live on a small part of a street between two major streets and have helped three people "dig out" today from getting stuck entering or exiting our street where the plows have left banks from the adjoining streets. Be safe. Be considerate!

GM leadership: Suspend your operations for crying outloud! Expecting workers to risk their lives and those of others in trying to arrive at work (or return home later) is insane. Can't the union do something about this?

Because GM doesn't care. As long as they get what they want.....trucks. People are secondary.

Why doesn't the sheriffs department call GM and tell them to keep the hundreds of people they employ (and Lear and LSI) to stay home and off the streets. People are not dying to buy these vehicles (otherwise my husband would not be without a job in April) so why risk employees lifes to build them. This is CRAZY ! ! ! !

General Motors must be an essential business, they have no plans on closing!! As long as you get there, they don't care how or if you get home.
