Guard deployed; sheriff expands search
The National Guard has deployed in Dane County to help motorists stranded on Interstate 90/39, while the Rock County Sheriff's Department is sending out deputies on snowmobiles and an airboat.
Rock County was setting up a command post and shelter at the Anchor Inn in Newville about 10 p.m. and planned to send snowmobiles south from there to help motorists and passengers on the Interstate, Sheriff Robert Spoden said. At the same time, the department planned to send deputies in an airboat north from Highway 26 to help people stranded on I90/39.
The sheriff's department, which was keeping all shifts on duty to help the State Patrol and conduct searches and rescues in Rock County, also planned to check I90/39 south of Highway 26 and Interstate 43 in the county as soon as possible, Spoden said.

The National Guard ceased to exist last year with the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, which gave the president of the united states power over state governors in regard to their militias.

I work in emergency services so I had to go. Thank god for 4 wheel drive. I keep a wool blanket in my car and was dressed appropriately. Trust me, the drive to work and home again was not fun.

First, a county cannot call out a military unit; it is done at the state or national level. They may have called a Dane county based unit, and some from Janesville got the word also. As far as the political note, The Guard is a national asset and they are all ready to serve on the national front if called. The guard’s secondary mission is to support state in times of emergency, not as some think to be a state asset first and a national asset second. Lets try to stay on track here and help our neighbors dig out of this mess….

I recieved a phone call from a friend last night to tell me her husband was activated last night to help with the stranded motorists. So I know the national guard from Janesville was called out. Don't know if he made it home yet but do know they were in for a long night.

At a political note, this is what the National Guard should be used for, to help out people in our own state and country.

Actually, the soldiers of the Janesville Armory were brought in. What they did, I'm not sure but I know they were at the armory waiting for orders.

Sounds to me like Dane County did things the "Smart" way by ordering up the National Guard....What happened to Rock County? I'm sure our Soldiers were ready. Well, that's politics for you!

Normally I would have stayed in but,my tenant called and said the furnace was'nt working. I thought bummer for me. But, they need heat . so,you go out. Then,a family member needs a prescription and you go out again. These are reasons to go out on days like this .Roads sucked , visibility sucked but,you go because of need, not want.

I don't understand why people felt the need to go out in this! It's insane! At 11pm I was coming under I90 and it's a parking lot in the wb lanes. It's not like we didn't know this storm was coming!

An even better idea is STAY OFF THE ROADS IN THESE CONDITIONS!!! We all know this is Wisconsin and you are going to have to drive in snowy weather at times, but there are times too when you should just stay home. Today was one of those days.

Just an idea. Always carry blankets, hand warmer packets, flashlight, batteries, candy bars/energy bars/MRE's and bottled water when driving in these conditions.
