Fire destroys Brodhead barn and shed
A shed and barn, owned by Tom Hoesly of Brodhead were destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon at W1508 Ten Eyck Road, Brodhead.
Upon arrival at 2:55 p.m. firefighters found a shed attached to the barn fully engulfed in flames and spreading to the barn, according to the Brodhead Fire Department.
A family member had been working at the farm during the day and had been gone less than 20 minutes when a neighbor reported the fire, according to a department press release.
Although the barn did not contain hay and is not used for milking about 40 head of cattle were being housed in the 45-foot wide by 70-foot long structure. The cows escaped unhurt and were moved to a farm near Orfordville with the help of family friends and neighbors.
The fire was under control in an hour, but the buildings were destroyed. Estimated damages have been listed at around $25,000.
Thirty firefighters from three departments—Brodhead, Juda and Albany—responded to the scene. Response times were slowed due to weather and road conditions from the day’s snowstorm. A backhoe from Maddrell Excavating also was used in the overhaul process.
No one was injured. Firefighters remained on scene for six hours. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it does not appear to be suspicious, according to fire department officials.
