MADISON (AP) —Two people were taken taken to a hospital after getting sick from chlorine gas at the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District plant Monday.

The plant’s assistant chief engineer, Mike Simon, says two chemicals were mistakenly mixed together creating the chlorine gas.

The Madison Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was called to the plant.

Simon says the two people taken to the hospital were the only ones in the area at the time.

Officials say sodium hypochlorite from a tanker truck was mistakenly pumped into a tank holding ferric chloride, causing the release of the chlorine gas.

Considering both the state Capitol building and the University of Wisconsin are connected to it, I'm surprised the Hazmat Team doesn't man an office at the Madison Sewage plant 24/7.
