MADISON — A snowmobiler is dead after he drove off a Dane County trail into the path of a milk truck Thursday.

The man was identified Friday as Steven J. Twing, 44, of Windsor Township.

In a news release, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said Twing was driving a snowmobile north on a trail when he failed to stop at County V in Windsor Township.

The milk truck traveling east on County V struck the snowmobile. A Med Flight doctor pronounced Twing dead.

The incident happened around 4:10 p.m. Christmas Day.

I think Mr Angus has a valid point.

Stick to the subject of the article.

My thoughts and prayers go out the members of this family.

I agree with SpongBob, there is no need for that tone Angus.

How sad that half of the comments to this tragic story are "Gazette Bashers" looking for typo's.......very nice. You folks need to re-evaluate you lives if this, "find the errors game" is the highlight of your day. My condolences to the family of Mr. Twing.

I would like to request the removal of Scott W. Angus' comments. They are much too aggressive and I don't care for his tone.

I nearly slammed into a sled on HWY 14 east of Janesville (where the trail crossing is west of Carvers Rock rd) back in the late 90's. Guy just never even bothered to slow down. Nothing but open field other than the signs on the trail to stop. Only thing that saved him was I seen his headlight coming up to the road fast. Otherwise I wouldnt had slowed down enough before I had to slam the brakes on. If it was lighter out (was 6:30am) I may had not even noticed him coming up.

This probably will be another bad snowmobile year.

Boy, I agree with Scott...I would bet those that are the most hard on the Gazette are probably the worst at their jobs. Just that kind of people. I think the paper does a nice job, I read it online daily from northern Wisconsin and appreciate all of the information I get. Thanks. As for snowmobiling, we live right in the middle of some of the best trails in the midwest and you can take a really sensible person and put a helmet on them and they can turn into a crazy person. Death happens all the time. It is, without a doubt, my least favorite time of the year and April 1 is one of my favorite days of the year/the day they close the trails. People just do not realize that they need to be so careful on those things as whomever is coming at them can be a real nutcase and cars do not look out for them. It is up to the driver of a snomobile to be totally on guard. With all the snow you have down there, you will be hearing more about this. We surely do hope you will trailer up here sometimes, too, and enjoy our very sophsicated trail system that we have in Vilas County.........the scenery is just beautiful, lots of deer and other animals wandering around. Hoping to see you soon.

Fellow Snowmobilers, it's time to slow down and use good common sense out on the Trails. There has been four fatalities already this year and the season has just begun.

I didn't mean to cause any trouble. :) I was just hoping that the sentence about "name being withheld" was the incorrect part of the story, and that the family HAD been nofified first. That's all. My thoughts were for the family.

stupidjanesville:

What's an "opps"?

Apparently errors even occur in the comment section. Interesting!

I am concerned about the snowmobilers who are driving on the road out west of Footville.
They don't really seem to be in the ditch but on the road. It is a 1/2 mile plus part of the trail where there is not a place in the field.
Please be careful as it is a dangerous part of the trail.

Glad we can amuse you guys. We're far from perfect, and we acknowledge that.

But I challenge you to put your work - produced under deadline pressure - before tens of thousands of people every day. Think they might find a few errors?

Ah...I see they have updated the article now. But I do agree with 031103. I enjoy reading the Gazette and playing "find the errors".

I presume this is an update to the original article. If you dislike the gazette so much, why do you read it?

rickwantsmoney - Yeah, I think the Gazette made an "opps". Big surprise!

"The victim's name is being withheld until his family is notified" and yet his name appears? Anyone else think that makes no sense?

Also, think about how your death will impact the life of the poor driver who hits you.

I was on my way home yesterday from Fort Atkinson when a snowmobiler almost pulled out in front of me. Folks, please be careful...if not for yourself, for your family.
