MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Janesville area has the highest unemployment rate in the state.

New figures from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development show unemployment in the Janesville area was 7.4 percent in November, up from 6.6 percent the month before.

Those figures do not include the 1,200 workers who lost jobs Tuesday when General Motors ended sport utility vehicle production at its Janesville plant.

The new DWD report says unemployment increased in all of the state's 12 metropolitan areas in November. It was up statewide as well, to 5.3 percent from 4.4 percent in October.

Madison had the lowest unemployment, at 3.9 percent last month.

Unemployment in the Milwaukee area was 5.5 percent.

DWD Secretary Roberta Gassman says the figures "underscore the challenges we face in a prolonged national economic crisis."

This rate of unemployment comes before the GM closure. Expect this number to go up...

What do you expect. All Janesville had was GM. Now it's done. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

The news on GMAC is big to this area and the closing will affect more then you think. GMAC has been a part of this community and it is heart breaking to see it sit idle. The heart of the employees still helping the less fortunate when their future is not so great was awesome and all the ones that complain and nitpic at the press coverage on this have a choice to read or not read. For the ones that think it wont affect this city have another guess coming. My heart is with each and everyone that lost their jobs whether GM,Lear or any other company that was connected to this.It will also be heavy in the near future when more jobs are lost due to the effect of these closings. Janesville will feel the bite of this for a very long time and I hope and pray they get something or someone to come in and put jobs back in our community as 2 to 3 year of unemployment and sub pay is not as long as we think and most people will conserve and save what they have and then that affects the stores and other businesses as a whole. Reality is the loss of these companies will affect Janesville deeply and THAT IS NEWS!!!!!

yes, there are a lot of articles. But I have lived in other places and the local media does the same thing. Of course, you can't lump stories like the food drive in with the GM layoff stories. That was about charity work. Just be patient and human an live through it.
JVL - since the plant is not technically deactivated I think is the reason for no job searches. Technically if you have a possible call back date, then no search. I might be wrong, but I think that is close. It doesn't have to do with sub pay. Of course that applies to us to who are going to school also.

Unidentified, enlighten me as to when the last time the plant shut down?

There's a difference between SUB Pay and the Jobs Bank, as well. Don't you need to qualify normally for state unemployment bennies regardless?

beefererL: You don't have to visit this site or read the articles. That holds true for anyone else who is tired of reading these articles. I'll bet the farm that if a new company comes to Janesville and is hiring a significant amount of people, that the Gazette will cover that also. Right now it's mostly all bad news and the paper reflects that.
----
This is the biggest news story to hit Janesville since the last time the plant shut down (I didn't live here at that time so I don't recall the date) and the floods. What's more, is that it comes at a bad economic time for the entire country, which only makes matters worse for our area. There have been numerous other staff reductions and closings the Gazette has covered. However, none are as significant as GM.
--------
There are NO jobs out there for these people to go to. That includes those who don't work at the plant. I get tired of those who seem to think moving on is as simple as waking up the next day and everything magically gets better. Although I think Janesville will get through this, I think there are a tough few years ahead of us and the Gazette will likely continue to cover this story. As much as people seem to complain about these stories, they always get the most blog responses and traffic.

JVLfornow: right in the middle of the article it states that the 1200 GM workers just laid of are not included. Or are you talking about GM workers laid off earlier this year or even last year?

re: you do have to admit that the number of articles about the same topic is a bit ridiculous though.

I don't think so at all! I have never worked for GM and neither does anyone in my family, but I know that we will all be affected by this layoff for a long time to come. And I don't care where you work in this town: local government or the school district, any retail stores or restaurants, health care or many other industries, you WILL be affected! While it may be hard to read all this stuff at the same time that we are trying to enjoy the Christmas season, it is nevertheless the most important news that is happening in Janesville right now. It does not seem that the Gazette is ignoring other areas of news (such as the Interstate) in favor of reporting on GM and its suppliers.

Isn't a requirement for that Statistic to be able and looking for a job? Those from GM (no disrepect meant) are collecting their sub pay, therefore they would not be actively looking for a job right? Wouldn't this mean they will not be included?

Ooooooo! I know, I know. Why doesn't beeferer start his own newspaper so we can ignore it. Hey, I don't fall in love with every article and a lot do have local interest. But this is a country of free choice, you don't have to read it. And if you think you can do better, then try it and see how many people agree with your choices. That's the American way. Or you can read the Onion, they don't usually have local Janesville content.

Oooooo! I know, I know. Why don't you just do a story on GM and the hard times ahead for the workers? Or maybe a story on how area businesses are hurting? Or how about this- do a story on how Janesville hasn't given up hope on getting another product in the plant? Or this: Memories linger on, How long until GM disassembles the plant, or... the list goes on and on and I am guessing that the way they are cramming it down our throats, we ain't seen nothin' yet. Give it a rest already. Why not talk about I-90 and the way weather affects traffic or keeping your vehicles off the street after a snowfall? Oh, I see. You have beaten those stories to death too.
