Road conditions deteriorating in Rock County
Road conditions are worsening due to drifting snow, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office reports.
East-west roads are being hit hard, Lt. Gary Groelle of the sheriff’s office said at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday. Highway 11/14 east of Janesville is in particularly bad shape, made worse by a car-versus-semi accident just east of the intersection with Van Allen Road, Groelle said.
Rock County road crews are doing what they can, but drivers should prepare to take extra time and drive slowly, Groelle said.
“I think it’s only going to get worse,” Groelle said, but the sheriff’s office is not yet asking people to stay off the roads. It may come to that later today, however, Groelle said.

Just to clarify....I wasn't saying that my gas guzzler makes me any safer, I am just thankful I have four wheel drive to get down my drifted in the backwoods roads. I NEVER drive fast just because I have a 4x4, I just feel a bit more confident I am not going to get stuck! Especially since we are having WONDERFUL winters again like we used to have. I really wanted to get a sipper this past year, but glad my hubby talked me out of it.

LULU...I totally agree....I am a very cautious driver, not saying I don't make mistakes, but it is totally that other person that drives me insane. If there was no traffic, I would go out in this all day long. I could creep along at 5mph just like I do anyway, but at least I wouldn't have some jerk riding my a**. Accidents have nothing to do with having a car or a truck, accidents usually are the effect of inattentive drivers.

I have to drive through that area tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it. Wisconsin is horrible about plowing and salting and driving skills. Actually it starts just north of Rockford. Maybe we should let Wisconsin have everything north of Rockford.

I am confident with my winter driving skills... I just worry about those who are in too much of a rush to care about other people's safety.

Gandalf, it's not ironic that on my daily drive to Madison most vehicles I see in the ditch are cars. I have yet to see an SUV or truck in the ditch this year, but have seen about 8 cars. Say what you want but you couldn't pay me enough to drive a car in WI.

My Honda has all wheel drive and I still slow down. I actually feel safer in the Honda then in the Ford we own that has four wheel drive.

I'm with Gandalf. I used to own an Amigo and a Pathfinder, so I know 4x4s. People think that four-wheel-drive is some sort of force field that protects them whatever they do. In fact, in icy or snowy weather, all-wheel-drive is actually better and safer, especially at speed. The 4x4 may be able to climb out of a snowed-in driveway a little better, but on the highway, you shouldn't have your four wheel drive activated anyway. Then there's the high center of gravity that most SUVs have as a feature. Yes, it helps you over the rockface without ripping open your vehicle's innards, but if you slide off the road, you're many times more likely to roll over. And rollovers are when people are killed.

hey rockstar it doesn matter if you know how to drive or not and half the time i think there are lots of people that should go back to retake there driven test.and it doesnt matter how big of a truck you drive you should still drive slow for this kind of stuff cause you guys are going to be the ones that ended up killing someone else and all of us want everyone to stay safe.

"Road conditions deteriorating in Rock County"
That line could have been written in July. lol
Seriously, whether you drive a little gas sipper or a big guzzler, drive to the conditions and be safe so we can all have a happy holiday season.

It's kind of ironic that most of the vehicle slide-offs and flips are large SUV's where drivers think they can drive faster than everyone else.

I was doing fine at 55 mph this morning on Hwy A East until I met up with someone going 25 mph. I know there's no such thing as "too slow", but let's get real here. The roads were fine. After passing the car by Johnstown I was doing 50-55 mph, and a "little gas sipper" passed me. I'm pretty sure my heavily weighted 4X4 truck had better traction, but they felt the need. I think I'm usually more cautious than most. I notice the cars in the parking lot here in Whitewater are getting drifted in now.

My little gas sipper handles fine in the snow. It just so happens that I know how to drive.

Gazette...thank you for the information. I pity the people though that NEED someone to tell them that the roads are not good. Look out your window, that should be information enough. I guess I am fortuneate enough that I don't have to drive anywhere, but, even if I did, I wouldn't. And I THANK GOD I kept my gas guzzling GENERAL MOTORS TAHOE! I would be kicking myself in the rear end if I would have jumped on the bandwagon and baught a little gas sipper. Phew.
