Jefferson County deer tests positive for CWD
Farmington Township--A white-tailed deer from a hunting preserve in Jefferson County tested positive for chronic wasting disease, according to a Friday news release from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
The 7-year-old buck was owned by Steve Hookstead, Helenville, and was killed Dec. 1, the release said. Only two deer remain in the herd, and they have been quarantined. Hookstead has another herd on the preserve that is “medically separated” from the first herd and is not being quarantined.
To date, 99 farm-raised animals in Wisconsin have tested positive for chronic wasting disease on nine farms and hunting preserves, including 82 on a single Portage County operation.

Although CWD does have a correlation to deer farming, there is no evidence it is actually caused by human herd management. It may simply be a matter of a concentrated population more readily becoming symptomatic, and the prion disease may have existed in nature for a long time before it was noticed.
