Winter Storm Watch update

From the National Weather Service:

A winter storm watch remains in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning.

A powerful winter system will develop over southeast Colorado Thursday morning and track across northern Missouri, central Illinois, and northern Indiana Thursday night. Widespread snow will develop late Thursday afternoon and become heavy at times by Thursday evening and overnight. The snow will taper off Friday morning.

Snowfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible, with the heaviest amounts along a line from Lone Rock to Milwaukee. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible, which may enhance the snowfall totals in localized areas. Locations near the Illinois border may experience a period of sleet and freezing rain mixing with the snow Thursday evening, which would cut down on snowfall totals somewhat.

In addition to the heavy precipitation, strengthening east to northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow through Friday morning.

A winter storm watch is issued when heavy snow, and/or sleet, and/or freezing rain may combine with strong winds to cause major impacts to commerce and society. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts for updates and possible warnings.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

If the roads were properly cleaned and treated it would not be such a life and death experience when driving in the snow. Ive had enough hearing that old chestnut, "if you've lived in Wisconsin long enough you should know how to drive in the snow." What about this, it's snowed long enough down through the years on the paved roads that they (the all powerful OZ), should know how to properly maintain them by now!

Yea, it's crazy seeing how people drive! Can I be invincible like them? In fact, this morning, about 7am, I was coming up Hwy. 51 from Kwik Trip going towards the Job Center... It freaked me out that the two buses were at the Mexican Restaurant about the time I was just passing the Pheasant Farm.... School Buses!!

There are some people drive like they are immortal when it snows... The other night driving home from work I was scared out of my skin seeing the way some drove. I was going so slow and people passed me on city streets! One person got a block ahead of me and had a spin out.... Scary as hell... I wish people would take other peoples safety into consideration...

Funny, I remember a year or two ago that I saw mostly pickups and suvs in the ditch on the highway.

I drive an H2 and very considerate of other drivers, slow or not. People speed around me and cut me off - just to stop & turn right in front of me. They don't realize that I wouldn't rear-end them, I'd roll over top of them. Nothing stops on ice - nothing. I usually have my 10 week old baby girl with me & it's scary how inconsiderate people are. I'd rather take 5 more minutes getting home safe than sitting in an accident for 3 hours (in the freezing cold) with my tiny one.

Thundersnow (which is nothing more than a thunderstorm with snow instead of rain) occurs when there is covective energy avaialable in the atmosphere. Essentially when you have a strong extratropical cyclone (strong low pressure)it creates mixing which electrically charge the particles in the clouds. In this case; relative warm moist air is being lifted over a front just south of here, and that warm air is mixing with the very cold air aloft in the atmosphere. This creates conditions favorable for the lightning/thunder and snow.

cjjs35: I don't think thundersnow is new but maybe it happened more frequently in the past. I know first hand because in November 2006 my car was hit by lightening while I was driving down highway 14 near Oregon. It is a very real and scary thing.

chch67-I would never say anything about a young, new driver. They obviously lack experience. The people I'm talking about have had their licenses for years and should go back to drivers ed class. Your daughter probably drives better than they do.

I live on a side street that is not plowed either and i do not have a truck or 4 x4. But some people do need to slow down i have a daughter 1st yr driving in the snow so when you people talk about others driving slow and being scared she may be one of them, but does need to learn how to drive on the snow and ice as she lives in wisconsin too. thanks

I work in Madison and drive in this 5 days a week. You think our side streets are bad? Try driving in Madison. They complain about the same, no plowing. How would you like to pay what they pay in taxes and still not get plowed? I appreciate what I have with what I pay in taxes. I am lucky.

Actually the defense to driving on ice is next to nothing if you need to go somewhere get a pair of ice skates.

Absolutely. There is a happy medium involved when driving in a Wisconsin winter. No matter what you're driving, you put other people at risk by either impeding traffic or flying by everyone you see. People who are frightened to drive in this kind of weather should really stay off the roads. It'll be much appreciated by those who can drive in it with care. Of course, this all is irrelevant since the plowing job done in Janesville is well below average.

Vehicles are driven by people and whether 4/w drive or not experience in the weather here is what makes the driver! I have had 4/w and perfer frt/w drive Now if i was ditch driving I would op for the 4/w.lol As to the plowing they need to slow down when they do plow and not throw it on my sidewalk (the driveway im use to) but trowin it 8 feet is rough as the packed knee deep ice it becomes is not removable without a jack hammer and that is almost nil. Have a Happy Holiday all and I think we will have snow for Christmas.

You're right, it doesn't mean you know how to drive in the snow if you have a 4x4. It sure helps though and makes it much easier to drive. Many people with 4x4's still can't drive in the snow. There's just a lot of bad drivers. Period. I will also say that I've gotten behind people that are so scared driving in the snow, they are as big of a danger as people that drive to fast. There's a happy medium and if you live in Wisconsin, you should have some skill by now with driving in the snow.

Just because you own a truck doesn't mean you know how to drive in the snow. Some of the worst drivers I've seen so far this winter have been people in trucks. It seems that some people think having 4WD gives them the right to drive like a maniac. EVERYONE just needs slow down and take it easy.

I truly feel for the people that live on these side streets.
I live on one of the busiest streets in Janesville & yes it's always plowed, but at certain times of the day I can not get out of my driveway due to traffic. There are pros & cons no matter where you live.
Maybe our new City Manager Mr. Levitt can help everyone out. It sounds like he thinks the streets need to be plowed too. I wish him good luck in his new job.

I should have taken the 4X4 today, but I took the car. No problems until I met up with the caravan going 30 mph. I save up my vacation time for winter when it snows, or I get sick. Friday is going to be a snow day for me.

If you can't drive in it, take the bus or quit griping. I love the fact that the city takes some financial responsibility. Side streets don't need plowing with 4" of snow.

I love how so many answers with the snow have been "get a car that can deal with it". Unfortunately many of us cannot afford a 4x4. Money is tight for many families this year. Going out and buying a truck is not an everyday thing. Think of everyone else before you say your smart Alic remarks.

your tax money devoted to snow plowing ran out in March. They're working on money you haven't paid yet . . . so they'll be reaching in your pocket soon. Still want them to PLOW PLOW PLOW??

Why people bitch about the City NOT plowing minor snow amounts on side streets boggles my mind. I have relatives who live in Buffalo and when I tell them about all the whining that goes on in this city relative to snow they simply can't understand it.

I hear ya silks. On our street, you can see where they stopped plowing from the last storm. There is an actual bump in the road where you go from clean street to ice covered street. Just once in a while I wish they would do our street. We pay taxes just like the rest of the city.
