MILWAUKEE--Milwaukee Fire Department paramedics resuscitated two adults and a 3-year-old boy who were not breathing when they were pulled from the second floor of a north side home where fire blocked them from escaping, fire officials said today.
Firefighters responded to the 900 block of E. Hadley St. about 3:40 p.m., where they initially found a man at the bottom of a stairwell leading to the second floor of the 2 1/2 story home. He had attempted to reach the residents upstairs but was pushed back and burned by the fire.
Battalion 1 Fire Chief Michael Labinski said the man left in a van before firefighters could tend to him.
The fire started in the living room and spread to the kitchen, dining room and attic of the home and also started coming down a front stairwell that was the only way in and out of the home. It had a back exit but it led out to the roof, according to Labinski.
All three suffered from smoke inhalation but were each listed in stable condition this afternoon, department spokeswoman Tiffany Wynn reported.
There were no smoke detectors found in the upper unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Milwaukee police. Estimated damage is $30,000 to the building and $6,000 to contents, according to Wynn.
