Army Corps asked why $9M fish barrier isn’t on
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A group of 29 U.S. senators and representatives want to know why a new electrical fish barrier isn’t being used to keep Asian carp from invading Lake Michigan.
The group wrote a letter this week to the Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard asking why the $9 million barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal hasn’t been turned on. It was finished in 2006.
The letter says the congressional coalition understands the need to thoroughly test the barrier’s safety “but these tests have lasted for many months. Meanwhile, Asian carp continue to head closer to the barrier.”
Imported Asian carp escaped containment ponds in Arkansas years ago and have been slowly moving north through the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. The fish are now 45 miles from Lake Michigan.

Unbelievable... there are many, many other ways the Asian Carp can enter the Lakes. The only real way to stop this threat is to wall off every possible entrance to the lakes from the Mississippi basin. Not possible. Electrifying water on a public waterway is a pretty risky venture.

How about nets and explosives??
They dye the river green on St Pats Day, how about adding some Carp killer to the river with the dye???
It won't reach Lake Mich as they reversed the flow of the river years ago.....

Let's start a "backfire" by dropping some Rock River carp into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The Asian carp will swim back to their containment ponds as fast as their little fins will let them.

Oh, eradicate them! Why didn't anybody think of that? I guess this eradication thing must be really easy, too, and there are eradication experts out there just waiting to go, but gosh, somebody is keeping them from it.

It's a very serious issue. The Great Lakes have already suffered grave damage due to the zebra mussel, and folks may remember the periodic alewife die-offs; the species has already all but destroyed sport fishing on the lakes and the Asian carp could deal the death blow.

.
The Army Corps never wanted the barrier in the first place, and tends to view its job as serving riverine traffic first, and protecting the environment somewhere well below that. It took a special act of Congress to get the project funded.
