KIMBERLY -- The private equity firm that owns the idle NewPage Corp. paper mill in Kimberly is sending NewPage's top executive to the Fox Valley this week to meet with village officials and union leaders.

The union representing workers at the closed mill has pushed for Ohio-based NewPage to either run the mill or sell it. The operation shut down Sept. 8, eliminating about 600 jobs.

Andy Nirschl, who serves as president of United Steelworkers Local 2-9, said NewPage CEO Mark Suwyn will be one of those coming to the meeting arranged Wednesday with New York-based Cerberus Capital Management.

Village Administrator Rick Hermus said a few papermakers have expressed interest in the mill.

The meeting agenda hasn't been disclosed.

What's that you're trying to tell me laissez-faire? Timmy's in trouble down at the old closed mill?

Ah yes, the laissez-faire free market. No social responsibility whatsoever. What is this, the 19th century?
.
Corporations are given certain protections under law in exchange for the social benefit of providing jobs. If they are not providing jobs they should not be able to mothball valuable property and devastate a community.
