Black bear, wild turkey permits increase for 2009
MADISON -- Hunters have until Wednesday to apply for a permit for the 2009 Wisconsin spring turkey hunting season or the 2009 black bear hunting season.
More than 221,000 permits will be issued for the spring turkey season, an increase of nearly 10,000 from last spring. That hunt starts April 15.
The Department of Natural Resources also has substantially increased the number of permits available for black bear hunting after a study found local populations are much higher than previously thought.
There will be 6,950 permits issued, 50 percent more than last year. The season begins Sept. 9, the first Wednesday after Labor Day, and runs through Oct. 13.
