MADISON -- There's still more whitetail deer hunting to do in Wisconsin.

A four-day hunt to shoot only does or young bucks without antlers opens Thursday. The hunt is open to bow and gun hunters.

The short season follows the traditional nine-day gun hunt in which the state Department of Natural Resources says hunters killed 277,000 deer, down 20 percent from a year ago.

The December hunt was created in 2006 to provide additional opportunities to kill antlerless deer from the overpopulated herd.

But some hunters have complained this year that DNR deer estimates may be too high.

The DNR advises hunters to double-check specific tagging and weapon regulations for the deer management unit or state park in which they plan to hunt.
