JANESVILLE—Rock County Administrator Craig Knutson announced today he has appointed Karen Cain as acting public health officer at the Rock County Health Department.

Cain will official assume her responsibilities leading the department on Wednesday, following the departure of Dr. Joseph Schurhammer.

Knutson said the county will be moving forward with a recruitment to fill the position on a permanent basis.

Cain has served since 2006 as the public health nursing director at the health department. She started at the department in 1986 and left in 2001 as a nursing supervisor. For the next five years, she was an assistant professor at St. Anthony College of Nursing in Rockford, Ill.

Cain received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota. She also holds a post-master’s degree certificate in nursing from Indiana University and is a registered nurse in Wisconsin and Illinois.
