Sandbag collection site will remain open in Rock County
JANESVILLE—Rock County will continue to collect sandbags through the fall, according to a press release from Assistant Rock County Administrator Phil Boutwell.
The county planned to close sandbag collection sites in August, but many sandbags still remain in place in shoreland and floodplain areas. Federal and state law, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regulations and county ordinances prohibit the permanent deposit of sand, sandbags or other fill in shoreland or floodplain areas.
The following locations will accept sandbags until further notice:
--Towns of Fulton and Milton: rock County Highway Department garage at the northeast corner of Sherman Road and Highway 59 west of the Interstate 90/39 overpass.
--Town of Janesville: Behind the Rock County Department of Public Works garage at 3715 Newville Road.
--Town of Rock: Old Airport Road, former access to the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport from the south off Happy Hollow Road.
--Indianford County Park, east of the Rock River only: Intersection of County F and County M.
Signs will mark each drop-off location. Users are asked to stack bags as much as possible to leave room for as many bags as possible.
The sites are not to be used for the collection or deposit of debris or trash, including furniture or other goods damaged by the flood.
Volunteers filled more than 260,000 sandbags during the June flooding.
