KIMBERLY, Wis. (AP) — The state of Wisconsin says state and federal help will be available for about 600 workers laid off by the NewPage paper mill in Kimberly.

The mill has already let at least 125 workers go, and the remaining 475 will be out of work when production stops Sept. 8.

State Department of Workforce Development spokesman Dick Jones said Tuesday the amount of money available for retraining will depend on how many people seek services.

Services will be provided at local job centers and paid for by the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program. Workers age 50 and older can apply for extended unemployment and other benefits.

Union president Andy Nirschl says the government help is appreciated, but workers would rather have the mill stay open.

More layoffs? C'mon Wisconsin, at least try and attract businesses or at least keep the ones we currently have.

The product they make is coated paper, used in magazine production. Imports from China, Korea and Indonesia are being dumped on the US Market.

Last I checked these countries are not in North America and thus not covered by NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).

Sounds like it Sarah. When I was laid off from Beloit Corp, which made paper machines, we qualified for training because we lost our jobs to businesses overseas.
