I have a company laptop at home, and can borrow it for vacations. If I couldn't, then I might consider buying one of these EEE laptops: http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=24&...
Prices start at about $400 on Amazon.com and they are available in Windows or Linux. We have a couple of evaluation units at work and they can do the basic stuff (e-mail, surf the web, play games, run Open Office) and are very light weight (2.2 pounds with the battery) and compact (8.86" x 6.69" x 0.79" ~ 1.33").
.
No CD/DVD and the drive is only 16GB, but it is solid-state (more rugged). You could slap a few movies on the hard drive in case you don't like what's on cable TV in the motel room.

We were listening to the police scanner last night while this was all going on. It didn't take the police long to get the thief. It was interseting hearing how they were cordinating off the roads and had the K9 unit out and working. Glad everything went down ok and no one got hurt. as for trying to "RUN" away with a computer, I gotta tell you it sure wasn't too smart. I think if he would have been smarter he would have gone for something smaller and easier to carry on the run...LOL well I guess breaking & entering and stealing is'nt that smart anyways.

I wouldn't lug a FREE Macintosh 2 blocks, much less go to the trouble of stealing one.
