JANESVILLE--Tornado siren testing will resume at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The test signal will be one to two minutes long.

When sirens sound, residents should not call the Rock County Communications Center.

If residents discover a non-working siren in their neighborhood, they should call (608)758-8440.

Sirens will not be tested if the weather is bad.

Sorry if you think my logic is improper. I worked for a public safty department in Rock County for many years. They do not test in the winter months. I asked the county emergency director why and she told me the freezing story. As I said I am not sure what months they start and stop. But they do not test in winter. I dont know why the story says they are resumeing testing now.

NOWWHAT: UMMM isn't it also cold and snow and freezing weather sometimes im March & April? Wouldn't the sirens be in danger then of breaking then too? Something about your logic dosn't add up if you think they are afraid they would break.

Sirens need to be tested evey month all year long. You never know when they will be needed. We found that out last Feb. with that tornado !

If the sirens are only tested from March or April through Oct. or November then they would NOT be resuming testing as the testing would still be going. Apprently nowwhat is really confused.

The Rock County 911 Center tests the tornado sirens the first Wed. of the month at noon. I beleave it is only from March or April thru Oct or Nov. They do not test in the winter because moisture in the sirens freezes. If they were to run them when they are frozen it could cause damage to them.

I thought it was the first Wed. of every month, but that could have changed. I can't remember if we had sirens back in the '60s, but something prompted my Dad to shove us all in the basement once. When we went back up, our backyard was torn apart. I followed the flattened grass trail across the field with my eyes until they came upon a house without it's roof. We were very lucky. I take the sirens seriously, and there can never be too many "false" alarms.

My point exactly...siren testing should be done on a monthly basis. There shouldn't be a vacation from it..storms don't take vacations so why take the chance with people lives?

Yes, That rare winter tornado came within a quarter mile of a friends home in the area it hit. So, I agree, They should be tested all year round.

I don't know, but severe storms happen all the time in the summer. Would make more sense to me to make sure that they are working properly all year long. Remember last year there was a rare winter tornado.
Better safe than sorry in my opinion.

Is it possible that they didn't test during the summer due to school being out? Would make sense as I haven't heard siren tests since school got out, and they're starting up the first week of the next school year.
