Less driving means less pollution in Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE (AP) — High gas prices are helping reduce pollution in Wisconsin.
Federal statistics show motorists drove 1.1 billion miles less in the first six months of the year compared to the same time a year ago. That’s largely because gas costs about $1 more per gallon now.
Fewer miles driven also means less pollution. Carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation sector were down 4 percent in the first half of the year.
This is the first reduction after years of steady increases in pollution. A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel analysis shows Wisconsin could reduce its carbon emissions from transportation by 1.2 million tons this year if the trend holds.
With power plant and other emissions added in, the state would reduce its carbon output by 1 percent.

janesvillean, spanky was not blaming high gas prices on liberals, merely stating the fact that liberals favor high gas prices because it works to reduce demand. Apparently being able to make a living comes secondary.

It doesn't matter what's wrong with your life. Maybe your toast got burned. Maybe your cat ran away. No matter what it is, you can blame it on "liberals"!

Absolutely right Sannio.
I'm anxiously waiting to put a Mr. Fusion conversion on my car right now, but our economy is still based on petroleum energy and there doesn't appear to be any energy revelations on the horizon yet.
Apparently gas prices are still not high enough to spark invention/innovation.
As an un-scientific indicator, I still see people racing up to stop lights, driving on low tires, commuting by themselves in 6000lb pickup trucks, (as is their choice I guess). The city buses seem to be mostly empty, and there are no more bicycles in the bike rack at work than there were last summer.
The changes will come without a doubt, but I hope they will come sooner. We can only live here as long as the air holds out.

"Thats why liberals like high gas prices!!!"
"Ummmm, what does that mean?"
Most democrats think gas prices should be higher to drive supply down, in order to help the environment as spanky said. However, when gas prices spike and everyone complains, then suddenly they all claim to be working to reduce gas prices which is a lie.
sannio, why all the hype over fusion? We already have readily available fission technology. In fact it would be money better spent to research reprocessing technologies for fission reactors (and dig up all the research that was already done in the cold war era on breeder reactors, etc).

I would like to see if less driving means less tourism dollars this year.

Let's quit talking about liberals and high gas prices. Let's talk about burning stuff for our energy needs, and how that's wrong for several reasons including environmental damage. Why aren't we talking about fusion? At the very least this country should be pumped up as much as we were about the space program in the 60's. I would even accept WWII rationing if needed to fund the fusion research. Look at all the troubles oil is causing us now, and very few working on an actual solution. Wind power, and burning our food isn't going to cut it.

When the oil runs out, it won't matter whether you have "more" or "less" cars on blocks in your front yard, I suppose. A GMC pickup bed would be a good planter.

It means they will sacrifice higher gas prices in order to save the environment. Kind of how they are pushing for mass transit. The less cars the better in their book.

Let's spend a trillion dollars on nuclear fusion research, rather than spending a trillion dollars on Iraq. Then we can burn hydrogen, or use batteries/ fuel cells rather than burn fossil fuels. We can save the oil for future generations to use as a handy hydrocarbon stock. Hydrocarbons are useful for many things besides burning them up in our cars.
