Menards embezzler sentenced to jail
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — An Eau Claire man who pleaded no contest to embezzling more than $100,000 from Menards has been sentenced to a year in jail and six years probation.
Tyler Hansen admitted stealing $120,000 from Menards, but the home improvement company claimed more than $620,000 was taken.
Hansen was a Menards employee for 16 years. He worked in the company’s wood recycling plant and was responsible for selling pallets. Hansen said he sold the pallets, but kept the money to gamble.
Eau Claire County prosecutors argued for a sentence of three to four years in prison, saying anything less would depreciate the seriousness of the crime.
Hansen told the judge during sentencing Monday that he’s attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings and hasn’t placed a bet in ten months.

Sounds to me as though not only did they have a thief but they had other people who dropped the ball. In every retail company, there are checks and balances to ensure procedures are being followed properly. $600k in pallet sales going missing over 16 years should definitely have been caught sooner through simple audits and such. In the absence of a dedicated loss prevention team at store or district level, the individual store management team should also be held accountable for the loss. This problem should have been caught much sooner!

GXuser...sounds like you once worked there!! I did and you are absolutely right, Menard's is a greedy jerk, putting it nicely. They could also be charged with insurance fraud, so I wouldn't be surprised if this story was "inflated" by them. Menard's has very unethical business practices, I know because I was friends with the asst. mgr's wife at the store I worked at.

Slap me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone on planet Earth with access to unlimited pallets could sell enough of them to make 600k+. And if they could, it surely wouldn't happen behind somebody's back. Menards is greedy, and they treat their customers like gold and their employees like dirt. Nobody should steal from their employer, but no employer should throw BS numbers out to try and get a longer sentence for somebody. I say don't shop there! Just kidding, but at least realize what they are. EVIL! No, no... still kidding. But - maybe they could find a way to spend 600,000 dollars on restoring the river in Eau Claire that they've been polluting for years.

There's a movie about the same situation, a woman who embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from a children's fund to feed her addiction to gambling, how crazy.

$120,000? That's a lot of pallet sales to go undetected. Wowzer.

Good thing he didn't accidentally walk out with a carpenter's pencil, or they'd really have thrown the book at him!
