Kenosha eyes smoking ban
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — A new ordinance could mean the end of smoking at nearly all public places in Kenosha, including all bars and restaurants.
The Public Safety and Welfare Committee is scheduled to discuss the proposal Monday.
The ordinance would also cover places of employment and some outdoor arenas.
Exceptions would include private residences, unless they’re used as childcare or health care facilities.
The full City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposal Sept. 3.
A number of municipalities in the state, including Madison, have similar smoking bans.
Some tavern owners oppose the measure. Dave Hamelink Jr. is the co-owner of Sunnyside Club. He says it’s one thing if there’s a statewide ban, but a local ban would just send customers to bars outside the city.

And by the way, 'Armyof3' is completely wrong when they state; "we all pay the same amount of taxes." Sin taxes on tobacco products are beyond the normal sales taxes that we all pay.

Here's the 'logic.' Smoking causes harm to society through high costs of healthcare related to smoking. Smoking kills. Okay, based on those arguments, we need to outlaw fatty and high-cholesterol foods, as these produce far more cost to, and deaths, in society. Smokers are easy targets as fewer people smoke. That doesn't mean non-smokers should be able to take away the right of smokers. Limitations, yes. The public at-large should not be subjected to smokers in places such as airports, bus terminals, cabs, buses, government buildings, etc. And, places like Miller Park have no smoking seating sections. They get it. Restaurants get it. Taverns and other small business owners get it. I don't smoke, but believe in the right of those who do to forgo having everyplace except their home, declared non-smoking. It simply isn't fair, especially since this is the only hazardous behavior being singled out for a ban.

thenewmail. Thank you for bringing up that it takes smokers so many years of smoking to get lung cancer. One thing you're forgetting there is that smokers have a nice little filter to smoke through, while people who do not smoke but have to breath in 2nd hand smoke don't have that filter. The smoke that 2nd handers breath in is WAY WAY WAY more potent than that which smokers breath in through their filter.

Well armyof3. The reason that its not reported is because it probably the lung cancer probably wasn't caused by second hand smoke. All the evidence of second hand smoke causing cancer is slanted by the anti-smoking lobbyist. I mean, just look at it logically, a scent of cigarette smoke in passing has so few microparticles in it, how could it possibly cause you any harm? It takes smokers 30 or 40 years to develop lung cancer smoking daily. And thats directly drawing smoke on the cigarette. And for a more scientific breakdown, do some research into the faulty nature of the initial studies on second hand smoke.
What really scares me is how many people in this country are so willing to take the rights out of the hands of business owners. If a business owner wants to cater to smokers, it should be his right. If you don't like it, speak with your dollar. This is still a capitalist country, and not a fascist one, correct? But the whiners in the country who are so upset by being inconvenienced seem to want to legislate everything that upsets them out of existence.

we all pay the same amount of taxes... just because tobacco companies increase the cost of their packs and cartons of cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco (papers, tubes, and rollers included), cigarellos, and/or cigars doesn't mean that we're not all suffering on an economic standpoint...
-------------------
if you chose to smoke, you will be the one(s) most affected negatively by what may be proposed on a statewide standpoint... how do you expect those of us that chose not to smoke to contend with second hand, no matter where we go... smoking in bars and restaraunts is relatively standard (minus Madison area, and now the Kenosha proposal)... in most work places, there are designated smoking areas, however, there are a few organizations out there that already refuse smoking on company grounds... "so don't go where people are smoking"??!! every day, non-smokers are diagnosed with, are dying, or do die from a form of lung and trachial cancer... does anyone see it reported in the local publications nation wide?? NO!! why is that?? if anyone can answer that, by all means, go for it!!
