From the WCLO Newsroom:

High school students in Janesville may soon earn college credit in their regular classroom.

Many high school students in Janesville already take Advanced Placement courses to prepare them for college. Craig High School Principal Mike Kuehne says the district may take those classes one step further. The idea would be to help students earn college credit before high school graduation.

The Janesville district is submitting a grant request to the Janesville Community Foundation to plan curriculum which could satisfy both high school and college credit requirements. Kuehne says this could give a graduating high school student a real step up at the beginning of their college career. High school teachers would need to be qualified, and the students would pay college tuition, while still in high school.

Kuehne is hopeful the program could begin as early as the fall of 2009.

You already can graduate early, its not like they're trapped in high school. If they're on top of things when starting high school you can plan curiculum to graduate early. Or did you mean it should be made easier to graduate earlier? I knew a friend who graduated a year early but it had nothing to do with college; she just wanted to be out working.

Here is novel concept. How about letting the high school kids graduate early and then let them actually take college classes instead of keeping them trapped in high school and charge them tuition to boot.

I took several AP courses and it certainly helped in qualifying out of intro classes and letting me register for classes before all of my peers (that really helped out). Actually getting real college credits sounds even better, although I wonder how much they will charge for tuition. When I was in high school my family couldn't afford a lot extra, and most of college was paid with finantial aid. Would high school students be offered finantial aid?
