Nearly 5 percent of state’s population is Hispanic
MILWAUKEE (AP) — New population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday show Wisconsin’s Hispanic population has increased by 41 percent since 2000.
The figures show nearly 5 percent of the state’s population is Hispanic. That’s about 272,000 people.
In that same period, from 2000 to July 1, 2007, the state’s African-American population increased 9% to 337,493, or about 6% of the state’s population.
The growth in the Hispanic population isn’t unique to Wisconsin, but reflects a national demographic trend.
State Representative Pedro Colon, who was born in Puerto Rico, says the values of Latinos are aligned to Wisconsin. He says it’s a culture that rewards hard work.

It's obvious that whites are not that smart. They all seem to think if you are brown you are from Mexico. I don't think they know that behind Mexico there is all of central America and South America which aren't Mexican people! And who cares how they live, nobody cares how white trash people live or how many people live with "White" people.Half this county is racist becase they don't want to be over dominated by other cultures, because white people think they are "Thee All Mighty" and that America only belongs to them.

I am not racist at all. I am proud to be American-Mexican. But I also believe in the American dream...
THIS LAND IS MY LAND, AND THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND. I am very willing to share it with anybody as long as you RESPECT it and OBEY the Law as we all should...

I've never had anyone try to make me conform to their language and culture. It's us, people from the United States, that trys to get everyone to conform to how we are. I thought we were the melting pot-why should everyone change? If they can get along with limited english-which many do-then let them.
Racism is the word that is used for what I am seeing here but if you want 'me to change to conform to what you want' I guess I don't think the ethnocentrism is any better.

Actually I think the point some of us were bringing up is that 5% seems awefully small, and is likely just the LEGAL hispanic population. And the subject of legal hispanic population increases (which most of us are ok with) just reminds us of illegal hispanic population increases.
I agree that "living with extended families" shouldn't be an issue, but I disagree that speaking English shouldn't be an issue. When you immigrate to a country, you can still retain your cultural history, but you adapt to conform to the language and general culture of the country you're moving to. This means people should learn to speak English and adapt to follow the laws of the land (such as not having multiple wives, not performing honor killings, which are legal in other cultures). What illegal aliens from Mexico are doing is not really immigration, it is colonization. They are trying to change US to conform with THEIR language and culture, oh and take advantage of our generous human services and bleed our taxes dry while they're at it. There are already a number of service jobs that require speaking Spanish which I think is a shame. If I were to immigrate to Germany, I would never expect that I would be able to carry out all my business/schooling in English; I would learn to speak German!

I'm willing to bet that the majority of the immigrants being talked about are, in fact, legal. It sounds to me as if the people who poorly word their posts but aren't racist-right-assume that all immigrants are illegal or they just don't like any of them because some may be illegal. Press 1 for English, learn the language or leave, don't live with your extended families-be like us: I don't think any of these things have to do with legal status.

sewaelizebeth and others, I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't think most of us are being racist, although it may come off sounding that way due to poor/condensed wording. When we say we have a problem with hispanics over-crowding, what we mean is the growing number of illegal aliens crowding our cities, sucking our welfare, jobs, human services, hospitals, etc, and not paying taxes or obeying laws. It's not really an hispanic problem, it's an illegal alien problem. But people can easily get the 2 confused because today at least, the vast majority of illegal aliens are hispanics coming from Mexico. The last I checked, we didn't have a massive illegal alien problem from Africa, which is why nobody has made a complaint about the black statistic.

Over populated? By whose standards? I think Milton is over populated by whites then, by that reasoning. I see it is perfectly ok for one to be racist by all these posts. How come no one commented on the African-American statistic? Is that just too racist? Is it only ok to be partially racist? I'm just trying to figure this out.

Milwaukees' south side is over populated with hispanic's so I know there is more than 5% in Wisconsin.
Clinics, hospitals, schools, daycares, the UMOS office, and the temporary Services most of the employees are hispanic.
Wall to wall so I have no idea where they get this 5% from.

Opinionsforfree, then the solution would be to specify a maximum occupancy in the lease, then he could kick them out if exceeded. In fact there should already be some maximum occupancy for fire code reasons, but I guess those just apply to people in the building and not people actually LIVING in the building.

They had the flag for their county hung if the front windows which is tacky. Plus they had loud parties all the time. Didn't sound a like a good situaion

Probably the majority of individuals that are undocumented in the US would rather have a legal status. However, most are not eligible because of the rules about who can "petition" for you to receive your residency. The rules are pretty strict and fees are extremely high w/no guarantee of approval. If all the illegal immigrants were granted legal status, then the businesses that are exploiting them for small wages would close, because they would all go to work for someone who pays them better.

I agree that people should immigrate legally and learn the language and obey our laws. I'm not sure why the complaint was raised about multi-family homes; I don't care if people want to do that as long as they're legal. It would be a more interesting survey to see what percentage can't speak conversational English (I would guess it's rising fast), and of those, what language do they speak primarily (I'm sure it's Spanish).
I'm sorry, but now hispanic is a deragatory word? It means of spanish origin, what is the problem? Mexico was settled by Spain, hence they speak Spanish, hence they are hispanic. What next, is anglo-saxon derogatory, caucasian, etc? What I find funny is that the government considers all of south america hispanic. I have a coworker whose wife is from Brazil, and she is classified as hispanic even though they speak Portuguese (because it was settled by Portugal not Spain).

However, if I fled a country (and was willing to risk my life in doing so) so that I could have a better life somewhere else, I'll be damned if I'd fly my EX-country's flag in allegiance! (All the while being an illegal citizen).
.
And, come here, learn the language, don't abuse the system and become LEGAL....

Definitions in the USA
Further information: Racial demographics of the United States and Race and ethnicity in the United States Census and History of Latinos and Hispanics in the United States
During the 1970s, the United States Government defined the term "Hispanic" to identify Latin American individuals, and their descendants, living in the U.S. regardless of race.
The ethnic label Hispanic was the result of efforts by a New Mexican U.S. Senator, Joseph Montoya, who wanted a label that could be used to quantify the Spanish-speaking population for the U.S. Census. The label Hispanic was chosen in part because in New Mexico, people of Spanish descent such as Montoya referred to themselves as Hispanos which was anglicized as "Hispanic."
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget currently defines "Hispanic or Latino" as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race".
The terms Hispanic and Latino tend to be used interchangeably in the United States due largely to a syntax inconsistency between the English language and the Spanish language. Some define the term "Latino" as a shortened version of the noun '"Latin American." Others define the word "Latin" as the name of the language used by the ancient Romans, while "Latino" is the name given to the people who spoke the language.

For the record, "Hispanic" is considered to be a derogatory term. "Latino" is supposed to be the correct designation.

Justmyopinion.. That's a little controlling, don't you think, do dictate how people should live? I know plenty whites who live in multi-family situations so they can cut down on housing expenses.
Even in the whitest of white Europe, it's common for more than one generation to live together and share households.
Also, I have never heard anyone complain about Stoughton and their obvious Norwegian influence. You can't walk down the street wihtout seeing Norwegian flags, signs, and art. Should we start telling Stoughton to learn American customs and stop encouraging illegal Norwegian immigrants?

Some quotes our politicians should learn to follow:
Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.
Theodore Roosevelt
There can be no fifty-fifty Americanism in this country. There is room here for only 100% Americanism, only for those who are Americans and nothing else.
Theodore Roosevelt
We can have no "50-50" allegiance in this country. Either a man is an American and nothing else, or he is not an American at all.

We were all originally from another country. I don't begrudge anyone coming to America - but come here legally, learn our language and obey our laws and customs. A one-family home means . . . ONE family please! If "minorities" want respect, they need to also respect other peoples' values and customs. Yes? Welcome to America!
