State spending 29 percent more to fuel fleet
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state has spent nearly 30 percent more to fuel its fleet of vehicles so far this year compared to 2007.
The Department of Administration’s Jim Langdon says through June of this year, the state spent $7.7 million on gas to keep the state fleet running. That compares with $5.9 percent during the same time last year.
Langdon says state agencies are trying to reduce fuel consumption by avoiding unnecessary trips, but so far there has been no measurable cutback in driving.
The state paid an average of $2.88 per gallon of gas last year. That average has risen to $3.69 this year.

janesvillean,
I was also trying to say to you should remove the beam from your own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else's eye. You pointed out the slants coming from McCain, but was wondering if you were aware of the slants coming from Obama.

janesvillean,
It wasn't a retort. I was simply pointing out the fact that both sides bend the truth. It's a "two wrongs make a right" fallacy. I don't want either side bending the truth.
.
If you want a retort, here it is: Technically we wouldn't be SAVING fuel by inflating our tires. We would just be reducing the rate at which we use it up. And there's still the fact that we are getting most of our oil from over other countries. Off-shore drilling will make more energy independent plus it will increase the supply of oil which, consequently, will lower gas prices.

"will save THREE TIMES as much fuel as we could ever extract from offshore US sources. "
Please provide the facts.

We will see. Obama's poll numbers have dropped and he can't break 50%. In a tie with Macain. The democratic lead congress has approval ratings in the low teens. How is that poised for a victory?

DrTalk, if that's some kind of retort, it's a very strange one. "Not only is your guy lying, so is mine! So there!"
.
No wonder the GOP is poised for a creaming of historic proportions this fall.

DrTalk, I understand completely. Republicans are bringing tire gauges to McCain rallies, but I am not allowed to use humor or mock.
.
As a matter of fact, a simple conservation strategy like tire inflation, which all of us can do (if we don't) and save money RIGHT NOW, will save THREE TIMES as much fuel as we could ever extract from offshore US sources. These are not figures that are in dispute. It is a comparison that the right has tried to obfuscate, as if Obama suggested that we could eliminate foreign energy dependence entirely, which he did not. But that's what you get when you listen to Mr. "Straight Talk", I guess -- it's talk that's just a little bit bent.

gwendt,
When I mentioned ridicule I was talking about janesvillean ridiculing McCain. I never said I condoned McCain handing out tire gages that said "Obama's Energy Plan." You need to learn to read things in context.

Obama has no plan for the energy plan except to tell us to inflate out tires and get regular tune-ups. WOW that's helpful. Mario Andretti does that all the time if you watch TV. Sorry Mr. Obama but, that may help a little bit but, it isn't going to bring down the cost of a gallon of gas.

sooooooooooooooo passing out tire gauges marked "Obama's Energy Plan" is considered alright? You musta scored an "A+" in negative politics 101.

janesvillean,
McCain didn't say that inflating tires wasn't good advice. In fact McCain said "Let's do that" in response to inflating tires. But McCain was referring to this comment by Obama: "But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling – if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much!"
Inflating our tires and getting regular tune-ups will not reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Apparently you'd rather resort to ridicule than debate the issue.

"My friends, Senator Obama knows good advice when he sees it, but I have advisers who are desperate for something to chip at, so they decided to make fun of his perfectly good advice. I can't be blamed if my advisors do that. That's straight talk from a maverick. When I'm president, I also won't be responsible for what is said and done by the people I hire, because I start every sentence with 'my friends'."

That makes more sense. I when first read it I thought they were comparing 5.9 percent last year to 30 percent this year.

I think "inflate your tires" is a reference to stop using resources foolishly without trying to get the most out of your resources. I just wonder why airlines are charging almost triple prices in some cases, and charging for things like pop and pillows, when fuel is "only" 30% higher? They say fuel costs are the reason for higher prices. Maybe they mixed up, and put an extra 0 after the 30%? Maybe they're sick of people complaining about all the security Gods running around, and just increase the price so most people will drive instead.

The dollar sign should remain where it is, but "percent" should be changed to "million" to correct the error

gwendt,
You missed McCain's point. In response to Obama saying to inflate our tires, McCain said "My friends, let’s do that. But do you think that’s enough to break our dependence on Middle Eastern oil? I don’t think so." McCain agreed that we should inflate our tires. Of course we will get more MPG by doing that. But that will not reduce our dependence on foreign oil which is what McCain's point was. You should pay attention to what is actually said instead of assuming he was making fun of all of us.

cheap shot? even a dumd a** knows more air in your tires makes them rounder & gets more miles per gallon. And when a presidential candidate makes fun of that suggestion-he is really making fun of ALL OF US!!! Where is his COMMON SENSE ???

Or, whybesad, maybe this is the reason: "The state paid an average of $2.88 per gallon of gas last year. That average has risen to $3.69 this year."
I guess there is no reason to look to the evidence offered in the actual article when you can get a cheap shot in, right?
Well done.
