Updated: Favre to be reinstated, report to Packers Monday

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Brett Favre will be reinstated and added to the Green Bay Packers’ active roster Monday.

The NFL announced the move Sunday after commissioner Roger Goodell had held off on granting Favre’s request for reinstatement for nearly a week, hoping Favre and the team could resolve their standoff. By reinstating Favre, Goodell is following through on a recent promise to force action.

The reinstatement will become effective at noon on Monday.

Favre’s agent, James “Bus” Cook, confirmed that Favre plans to fly to Green Bay on Sunday and report to the Packers on Monday.

“That’s the plan,” Cook said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Sunday.

Favre could be on the field as early as Tuesday.

Favre retired in March but has been having second thoughts. Team officials have insisted they are moving on with Aaron Rodgers, though, causing tensions to rise between Favre and the team.

It is not clear whether Favre’s reinstatement indicates that he has rejected a long-term, multimillion-dollar marketing agreement offered by the team. Reinstatement could force the Packers to increase their offer to Favre in hopes that he remains retired and avoids turning their training camp into a media circus this week.

Team officials publicly have ruled out releasing Favre, fearing he would immediately sign with division rival Minnesota. The Packers could still also trade him.

The team has a scrimmage at Lambeau Field on Sunday night, then does not have another scheduled public practice until Tuesday morning.

Favre’s arrival in training camp could cause a major disruption to the team, although he would not likely begin practicing with the Packers right away.

Coach Mike McCarthy has said the Packers have a plan in place should Favre report to camp. He first would have to pass a physical exam and a conditioning test, then would likely be limited to individual drills.

Goodell told the NFL Network on Saturday that he thinks the situation has lingered long enough.

“I think we have to force it,” Goodell said. “I think it’s come to the point where there need to be some decisions made on behalf of the Packers, on behalf of Brett, on behalf of all the fans.”

Ted Thompson has gotten a huge ego and it's all about "Teddy" and "HIS" team it has nothing to do with this team being owned by the community. What a joke. To just not even give Favre a shot at the starting position is foolish. Ted Thompson needs to find a different profession he sucks at being a GM.

YES the Packers have done a lot of flip flopping in the last week. Aaron Rogers is our quarterback no question. Brett would be welcome back. He will be a part of our team. In the second breath they take, the QB position is open--- to here Minnesota take him. Talk about waffling, and not being able to make up their minds. Brett called their bluff, and Thompson looks like a fool. He planned poorly for this. Fire him now.

Welcome back, Brett! Yippy! The thought of Favre wearing anything but Packer Green was making me ill. If it weren't for Favre, we'd still be going back to black and white footage to show the last time the Packers won a Super Bowl.

Brett has earned the right to come back and play. OR he will when he beats aaron rogers out for starting QB. The Packer Organization should be a a shamed of the way they treated him. He is outstanding, above and beyond any other QB in the league right now. The man is 38 and can still play. Those of you who don't think so are probably to tired of hauling around your big belly's and beer. It's called envy people. Hearing a lot of it on this site.

Just an average quarterback? Like Elway and Montana, Unitas and Marino. Have you ever looked at his stats? An average quarterback doesn't win 3 mvp's and doesn't have the records he has. Brett has a knack for getting out of trouble and making passes that an average quarterback would never attempt let alone make. Yes there is more to a team than just the quarterback but, they would have never won the super bowl without him. How many hall of famers has Favre had on his team in the last 16 years that have made the big catches and the big blocks and the big runs? I'm talking offense only. Fact is Favre is a first ballot hall of fame quarterback and had one of his better years last year with a very young team. He can still play at a high level.

I swear people are all just morans when it comes to packer football and brett favre, your all such bandwagon fans , this is exactly why people hate the packers and packer fans you all think brett is the only reason green bay won a super bowl in the last seventeen years, and we are talking only 1 super bowl, not three like new england. lets give some credit to the rest of the team whom without them brett is just an average quarterback, so please wake up and realize when the packers take the field on offense there are 10 other guys on the field with him making great catches, great blocks, running great routes all to make the quarterback look the part. This all seen thru the eye's of a football fan not a favre fan just something to think about.

I AGREE with JohnDoe~ I just HOPE he gets to see THAT!! lol! :)....From his seat on the BENCH, where he SHOULD STAY INDEFINATELY!!!...If "I" were GM, that's what "I" would do! lol! :)...HOWEVER, just the "THOUGHT" of trading him to MN is entertaining... to say the least!!!! ;) I'd LOVE to see Farve "tweek" out ANOTHER year for MN, just to deliver, yet ONCE AGAIN, NOTHING! :( :( :( Now, it WOULD BE for "OUR BENEFIT"!!! And FINALLY, AT LAST!!! :) :) :)
.
I AGREE, TOO, with villajanesville~ THAT WOULD BE TOO FUNNY!!! :) LMAO! *Princess Farve* in a SHORT skirt!! ;)...GOTTA MAKE SURE he "PRACTICES" HIS "SISSY" slide, too!....<re: Just in case any players should RUN toward him & all! lol!! :) :) :)

The Packers should go ahead with plans to retire Favre's #4 jersey during half-time of the Minnesota game and assign him a new number.

Let them compete may the best man win. It's the General Managers job to put the BEST team he can on the field if that means Rodgers than that's what it is. If it means Brett than that's what it is.

The Packers CAN'T take him back as the starting QB. They gave Brett his chance to come back prior to the draft, he decided retirement was his choice and the Packers made the (correct) decision to move on naming Rogers their starter and using draft picks for QB's.

Almost everyone also overlooks a very important fact when it comes to their decision with Favre:
Aaron Rodgers is in the last year of his contract, if the Packers bail on him now, he will bail on the Pack after this season and when Brett retires "for real". Then the Packers (with two rookie QB's) will have zero experience at the position the next season.

There is more to consider in this decision than Brett's past and his "legacy".

igotclout - they DID make an offer to take Brett back AND make he would have been the starter, no questions asked, NO competition for the job either! But as usual, 2 days before they were to fly down to Miss to see him and get the paperwork done, he calls and says he wants to stay retired. Sorry, but how many mulligans do you give the guy, legend or not??? Football is a business, and plans have to be made. This is not sandlot football, where you just show up and join right in.

Actually, having Favre back on the team will be divisive and will only benefit Favre, not the entire team. "A house divided against itself cannot stand".

biggirl - every player has to go through that. Just that most of them reported to camp already and have had it over and done with.
While I am a Packer fan and a Favre fan, I would remind all that the Pack DID give him a chance to un-retire and Brett waffled and backed out then too. He is responsible for this mess. The Packers had to move forward, they couldn't sit on their butts waiting all summer to see what he would do. Brett has essentially told them twice this summer that he didn't need the Packers, so what is so wrong in them going on without him? Remember - Reggie White Played in Carolina his last year, Lombardi went to the Redskins the last 2 years. If Favre plays for someone else, he would be just another Lambeau Legend to do so.

The recent report says that they will force him to go through a "physical exam," a "conditioning exam," and then make him do "individual drills" when he reports. The Packer management is disgraceful. Trade him, release him, or use him, but don't treat him like this. If they're willing to pay 20 million to keep him from playing, he's obviously worth keeping and playing. Do the right think, Packers!
