Public-access channels slam Charter’s plans
An association of Wisconsin public-access channels on Thursday strongly criticized a Charter Communications plan to change its cable TV service.
Charter’s plans would push its customers to buy into digital technology before most are ready for it, said Mary Bennin Cardona, executive director Wisconsin Association of PEG Access Channels.
“We’re really disappointed that they’re trying to push this. We think it’s discriminatory and really harmful to our communities,” Cardona said.
Charter spokesman Tim Vowell defended the company, saying very few customers are likely to be inconvenienced.
The changes were announced in a brochure mailed to customers last month. They included more entertainment channels and moving the public-access channels to the 900s, which are available only to those with digital TVs.
Not just any digital TV will do if customers want to view the digital channels, including the public-access channels. The TVs will need CableCard technology or something called a QAM tuner.
Customers could keep their older, analog TVs, but they would have to rent a digital-conversion box from Charter for $5 a month.

Perhaps it is time to bring public acces into the digital age. Streeming Video would bring it to folks regardless of wether they get cable or not.

The Janesville City Council is must-see TV.
Probably many of the people who are chronic complainers about everthing here never watch the council meetings and never see how the city operates and how things get done with the input of the people.

Mainstreet--pretty sad that switching to the DISH outranks your wedding and the birth of your children.
It is just television, I pity you.

There are many of us who watch public-access channels to watch our city council and school board meetings to observe how our elected representatives are making decisions and spending our tax money. They also show candidate forums before local elections to help me and others decide for whom to vote. By putting the PEG channels into digital (while maintaing several shopping channels on the analog tier!), they are TAKING AWAY my ability to follow my local governments. Charter's "justification" is that they have done this in other communities and had few complaints. If you also object to this move, call the Charter corporate office at 888-438-2427 (free number) and ask to file a complaint. Then file an online complaint with the WI Dept. of Consumer Protection at http://datcp.state.wi.us/cp/consumerinfo...... since recent state legislation (highly lobbied bt AT&T) removed local control of cable franchises and moved it to the State.

“They said Ned Ludd was an idiot boy
That all he could do was wreck and destroy, and
He turned to his workmates and said: Death to Machines
They tread on our future and they stamp on our dreams.”
This is a quote directly from Chumbawamba. It is not generally known whether or not Captain Ludd opposed digital cable, but it is well documented that had an extreme aversion to stocking machines.

nowind:
Nope, you don’t need a new TV, just a fairly low-priced converter box.
.
Just like you don’t need a new computer to post your comments, you could have used the one you bought 5, 10, or 15 years ago and it would have worked just fine. But I’d bet that like most people, you send your old systems into the landfill every 5 years or so. The Chinese people thank you for your contributions! (If you’re using a Kaypro or Osborne for your postings, my sincere apologies.)

Part of Charter’s proposed change included several new HD channels to their lineup. That’s something I for one was looking forward to. Then, suddenly, the seven people in Wisconsin who watch public-access channels, so they can see a really bad video of their kid singing off-tune in a school play, threw a snit and put the kibosh on the whole thing.
.
Just a suggestion for the analog TV luddites out there: the digital change, she’s a comin’, and real soon. Get a converter, get a new set, or get used to listening to radio instead of watching TV. But be thoughtful enough not to screw things up for the folks who plan ahead for these things.

The changed has been pushed back from Aug 12th to some time between September 16th to October 1st.
Maybe eventually there'll be no change.

I got that letter. I no idea what they were talking about???????
Charter probably depends on the fact that most of us are not tech wizards.
I'm certainly glad someone is on top of their scheme.
I don't need any more bill increases & I don't want any dumb
box on top of my TV.
