From the WCLO newsroom:

Two people were hurt in a one car roll-over accident near Clinton around 7:00 Monday night.

The Rock County Sheriff's Department reports a 17-year-old Clinton youth failed to negotiate barricades on Highway 140 where road construction is underway. The car rolled several times ejecting both the driver and a 16 year old female passenger.

The driver was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital for treatment while the passenger is being treated at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Neither driver nor passenger were wearing seat belts and speed was a factor in the crash.

The names of the teens were not released.

It sounds, to me, like the condition of that road is terrible. I could definately understand how an accident like this could occur and not just to a teenage driver. I've had close calls now and then in situations like this and I've been driving for 15 years. If the car was that badly damaged, they probably are very lucky they didn't have their seat belts on anyway. Like I said before, if I had been wearing mine when I rolled my car, I wouldn't be here today. I could see coming down on them if they had been drinking but alcohol was not listed as one of the factors in the crash so everyone should cut them some slack. Something like this could happen to anybody.

To "who" and "optimism" - Vehicle was beyond the construction zone, in a 55 MPH zone, traveling approx. 60 MPH, in overcast/dusk conditions. Barricades have little or no reflective markings when approached from the southbound lane.
.
I'm told the vehicle lost a door, possibly both, in a violent roll. With no support the roof caved in. Probably a blessing they weren't wearing those belts but we'll never know. What we do know is they're alive, feeling very lucky, feeling very guilty, and very traumatized by the event.
.
I have no empathy for you but I wish you well, high upon those pedestals.

To the person who can't feel bad for the kid's or parent's. You must not of ever made a bad decision when you were a teenager. Must be tough to be perfect and cold hearted

Before you judge these kids you need to understand the condition of the roads leading into Clinton. After last years sewer work and pathetic "paving" job there have been massive sink holes in the road leading to cars swerving all over the place to get through the road when it was open. When I left for work yesterday there weren't even barriers on the side of the road to indicate that it was closing but coming home I approached them too fast because I didn't realize they were there, fortunately I was able to slow down and manuever them. Perhaps this young driver didn't realize they were there either and in attempting to manuever hit one of our lovely sink holes - granted they should have been wearing sealt belts but you can't judge what happened based on the limited information in this story. So before you judge, drive a mile on our street, on second thought please don't since additional traffic will just worsen an already bad situation.

I also do not wear seatbelts I feel they r good but bad it all depends on the situation. I feel it should b your own choice, but kids should wear them always. my grandpa was against them also but he always made my grandma wear one, didnt make sense. sometimes they help but sometimes they make things worse.

Have you seen this area? The barricades are the problem. I drove through there last night and I thought boy this is going to cause an accident. That was at 6 p.m. Only took an hour to do so. Move the barricades. You have to go through them one car at a time going both ways. Shame on the highway department for putting them as they did!

I NEVER where my seat belt. When I was 16 I was in a bad car accident, the car had rolled a few times. The roof of my car was so caved in that the police said that if I would've had my seat belt on I would've been crushed. I haven't been able to wear a seat belt since. I am not advocating not wearing seat belts! I have 4 children and all of them are in seat belts and car seats at all times but I just can not wear one myself. I think that the idea that the road was under construction and that there were barricades around should've been a hint to slow down. They teach that in drivers education don't they? I think they did 14 years ago when I was getting my lisence.

Drivers Ed wasn't all that long ago!!! They teach you to drive the speed limit AND wear your seatbelts!!! You shouldn't have a license!!

Don't people listen. Another sad case of no seat belt. If they are stupid enough to get into a vehicle and not fasten their seat belt, then I can not feel sorry for them or the parents.
