Fumes force evacuation at Brodhead Senior Center
BRODHEAD—Two people were treated for dizziness from carbon monoxide fumes at the Brodhead Senior Center this morning, Brodhead Police Chief Thomas Moczynski said.
Police responded at 9:12 a.m. to the center, 1103 W. 2nd Ave., where officers detected an odor of fumes, he said.
Two women working in the kitchen complained of dizziness, and six people were evacuated, he said. Brodhead firefighters detected high levels of carbon monoxide near the furnace in the basement, he said. The furnace was secured until technicians can further inspect it. Inspection by Wisconsin Energy revealed no natural gas leaks.
The center’s patrons did a fantastic job of opening windows and doors and responding to the situation before authorities arrived, Moczynski said.

Most of my comments are unnecessary. I should add that I am thankful that no one was seriously injured and that Brodhead is a great little city. I was working in a house once and thought that I was coming down with the flu. I kept working for the rest of the day, but I had a pounding headache in the back of my head. I went home and took some Tylenol and felt better. I returned the next day to learn that the furnace had been malfunctioning and the house had been evacuated that evening. The next day I bought and installed CO detectors for my home and my mother's home. I would advise everyone to do the same. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer.

Carbon monoxide is the product of incomplete combustion. It is a colorless, ODORLESS gas that in large PPM causes death. The only way it can be detected is with the use of detectors. It is recommended that every home have at least one working CO Detector. Remember all detectors, smoke and carbon monoxide, have a life span. After 8-10 years it is highly recommended you replace them.

Six people were evacuated? Sounds messy. Don't you mean that the building was evacuated?
