From the WCLO newsroom:

Janesville could host street performers as part of its downtown revitalization efforts this summer.

The United Arts Alliance proposes to sponsor the performances on different dates. The performers could be musicians, magicians, jugglers or mimes, among others. The UAA and Leisure Services Department hope to schedule the performances in conjunction with other downtown events like the Farmers Market.

The Janesville Leisure Services Department is recommending the city council approve the request Monday.

This actually sounds pretty cool and I unfortunately can't think of anything sarcastic to say about it.

Watch the Council meeting on JATV-12 this evening for more info or, with City Council approval, additional details and applications for performing opportunities will be available by Tuesday afternoon on UAA's website: www.rockcountyarts.com

I think it is time for the city council to allow running races to be held in the downtown area. Safety and cost have always been their reason for denial. That is why the Janesville half marathon and triathlon are run on rural roads. The city does have alot to offer during the summer and a running event would help boost business. The cost for police is usually covered by the event sponsor. The city council and alochol advisory council need to back progress, not block it.

Thank you ProArtist for letting the general public know the difference between panhandling and street performers. Street performers add to the vitality of the outdoor environment. I think it's a good idea that Janesville residents are exposed to more artistic culture.

gazettefan- I agree, please for the love of all that is good, NO MIMES! :)
I think this is a great idea. I have seen street performers before and some are pretty good...even the mimes.
One performer I remember set up regularly on the boardwalk in Waikiki. He would paint himself completely in gold and was a statue/robot. It was entertaining seeing the reactions of people as they walked by and he would move.

Irish, are you one of the ones who turns around and leaves when confronted with paying a 2 dollar cover charge because there is a band playing somewhere.

Panhandling, by definition, is simple begging and there are laws restricting this behavior. The work of farmers is paid when they sell their produce. The job of a symphony musician is performing for a salary. The work of street performers is to share their art for your enjoyment earning simple voluntary donations in the centuries-old profession of busking.

Whatever...as long as they aren't panhandling and hounding folks for a "contribution" for their "performances".

Bring Mummenschanz to Janesville...that's a show I'd love to see.
