Parker High School plans mock crash

From the WCLO newsroom:

Janesville Parker students are participating in a mock crash today to serve as a reminder to stay sober this prom weekend.

Coordinator Stacy Nemetz says local emergency personnel will respond to the mock crash as though it was a real drunk driving accident. Nemetz says all students have had some sort of loss and can relate to the mock crash.

Students also have a recent reminder not to drink and drive: A weekend accident in the Town of Union killed a Wisconsin man. Rock County Sheriff's officials say alcohol was a factor in that crash.

You are right. I remember the days of being invincible. Hopefully someone will learn something from it though.

I had one of these back in the day @ H.S. It didn't do any good, but when one our classmates was actually killed in an accident (not prom weekend, however) it was a phenominal wake up call for a lot of us.

We did one of these in HS as well. I don't think it had much affect on students as many showed up trashed or went to parties afterwards and got trashed. Are any local HS's planning safe post-prom alternatives?

If this has any effect at all, I would be pleasantly surprised. People, especially Teens, don't believe bad things will happen to them. They don't change their behavior because of what might happen. They will do what they want to do unless something effective is done to deter them by their parents or by law enforcement. Teens that drink have a lack of respect for authority and will be unimpressed by this demonstration. This program will only affect students who are not likely to DUI to begin with.
