Local GM plant alters production

Workers at the General Motors assembly plant in Janesville will return to alternating production shifts as a United Auto Workers strike against a key GM supplier continues to create a shortage of parts at the local plant.

The Janesville plant will only run one production shift the weeks of April 21 and April 28 because of the UAW strike against American Axle.

Next week, day-shift employees will work their normal shifts and second-shift workers be laid off.

The following week, the roles will reverse, with second-shifters working and first-shift employees laid off.

Don't bother arguing about overtime at GM. Those days are over.

I hope they do get rid of the supplier. GM is so handcuffed by the union that they have an extremely difficult time competing anymore. Sorry, but times have changed and the economy is more service based now. My advice is to get a college degree so this stuff doesn't hit you as hard as it does in the manufacturing field. And if you want to throw out the argument about corporate jobs going to BRIC countries I am aware of it. But with a college degree, it is a lot easier to find a new job that pays the same then if you were working in a manufacturing plant on an assembly line.

Bigmike-Add $11,000. more in overtime ??? Lets do the math.....$11,000./ $21.00(time & 1/2)=523/hours.... Do you REALLY think GM will work over 500 hours in overtime???

Getting rid of this supplier?

Don't you know that's the plan???
GM is going to pay people $14/hour now. Which means they can build seats cheaper than Lear, they can build axles cheaper than American Axle, and so on and so on.
They're just waiting for the right time to tell everyone that.

Lear won't have jobs soon. LSI won't have jobs soon. The list of suppliers is nearly endless.

This contract that was signed by the union employees was the beginning of the end.

Mytake, please go and find just what it is that the UAW local 95 does for the community on an annual basis so you can comprehend before making those types of comments.
Call the union hall and ask for information.

mytake4u asks: “why don't the uaw members have some sort of helping hand event every week-end at the uaw hall for the under privledged.”
Well mytake-although they are no more obligated than you or anyone else to give up week-ends and/or money and goods, they do. Believe me they do. Many, many of them. Some sporadically, some regularly, and then there are those who give time/goods/cash every single week of the year. Do you need name, rank and social security numbers?
And you must know, holiday giving is only part of the generosity of the company, the union, and their employees and membership. Funny though, I’ve seen gazette articles related to their giving since comments have been allowed, and amazingly, a familiar group of people found something to complain about even then. (Holidays, bicycles, etc) Maybe you were one of them?

The reason most families cannot survive on one income any longer is because of the exorbitant wages the unions in this country demand. That drives the cost of living up so much that most families have to have 2 incomes just to pay standard monthly bills like mortgages/rent, power and light etc. It's also a fact that the more money you have, the more you will spend. If you make 60-80 grand a year but live like you make 40-50 grand a year, you can take that ocasional vacation or buy things with cash when you need them. A good many of the union employees complaining about the money they will lose are just worried because they probably have themselves so overwhelmed with debt that they will not be able to survive in the manner in which they are used to. Welcome to reality! Bigmike is right, live within your means instead of like you make a 100 grand a year!

that's the problem benthinkin. people only read but don't comprehend. nowhere did i complain about THEIR money. i said THEY complain about THEIR money and don't give a hoot about anyone else. not others money, but just about others. why don't the uaw members have some sort of helping hand event every week-end at the uaw hall for the under privledged. if they cared they would. again, they just care about THEIR money and themselves. thanks for your input.

I think GM needs to find another supplier and kick this one to the curb. Especially when it is affecting them financially.

Add another 11 grand to that 29 with overtime and you get 40 grand per year. Plus a spouse working too...come on..you're telling me a family can't make it on that? BS. Even if the spouse only makes 20 grand per year(That's a 9.50 per hour job) and provides the benefits. That is still 60 grand per year. Even if you live outside your means a little bit on that kind of money..You can for sure make it.

cardtrader-I didn't mean to degrade you or anyone else... If you really are supporting 4 people on $30,000./year "HATS OFF " I also live within my means and make a good living for 3.Maybe sometimes I don't live in the real world on what can be done on low wages,I just find it upsetting when you see so many families in need, and good jobs being lost.(more than just GM)

If you really read all my posts it is not the people that work at G.M I dislike it is all the Publicity that Plant recieves and the way it is spoon feed to the public like it is the only place in janesville that is feeling a crunch. My family of 4 lives on 30.000 dollars a year we pay are bills eat good and still have money left over to take in a movie on the weekend. You have to live within your means. As far as working for G.M no that is not a option for me, I like to work outdoors you can keep your political jobs where it 's not what you know but who you know to get in. And I will keep mine. I wish the best for all the workers there but do not sympothise with there situation. When the rest of the world is getting buy on a much lessor Hourly wage and no benefits.

Bigmike-_Full time at the new rate would be $29,000. before taxes...With your $40,000. year per family that would mean $11,000.from second income before taxes !!!! As I have said before are these families LIVING OR JUST EXISTING ???? Everyone complains when jobs are sent over seas ,but yet when Americans CAN'T make a LIVING on low wages it's people like you that say they can...Take a look around and then tell me that families are doing just fine!!!!! Oh and by the way this is just my opinion... I really feel OVERTIME at GENERAL MOTORS is a thing of the past !

14 bucks an hour with some weekly overtime makes a pretty good living for a single person and most families now have to have both parents working anyway so as long as the other parent gets a job with benefits, they should EASILY be able to survive provided they dont have 4 or 5 kids. The days of one parent working and one staying home are long gone for most people. 2 income families making around 40 grand per year plus together should be able to not only survive, but live good if they stay within their means. The only concern about taking a job at GM would be the down turn in sales of the SUV's built here which could result in this plant being closed someday. That would hurt everyone locally for awhile.

cardtrader---Yes you should be able to get a job soon...Newspaper article on Oct.2 2007 states for non-core jobs ($14.00/hr)will reguire a 2 year technial education degree. Not only will familes NOT be able to live on these wages.....but they will have to have more than a high school education.I have read some of your past posts so I do understand that you are ONE of many GM haters . I'm sure with all of your smarts you could/ would fit right in with the new hires, you seem to have all the answers, and think it's so easy working for General Motors .
