MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A University of Wisconsin-Madison student who found his fiancee murdered in their apartment will be let out of his lease.

Wisconsin Management Company owner Russ Endres had declined last week to say whether he would allow Jordan Gonnering to break his lease. But the company announced Monday morning that it would let Gonnering do so.

Gonnering found his 21-year-old fiancee, Brittany Zimmermann, murdered on April 2. Madison police are still looking for her killer.

Endres says in a statement that he thought it was inappropriate to discuss the lease until he had spoken with the students' families. He says that after talking to Gonnering's parents, he decided to release the 22-year-old from the $790-a-month lease.

This is a nightmare for everyone involved. The victim's family and friends, the landlord, the neighborhood, the university, the city, and the police department. Catching the killer will help, but things will never be the same for any of them.

One thing good luck to the landlord on filling this murder house now with al the publicity..... I don't mean to sound cold hearted but the owner of this appartment is kinda screwed now unless he rents it out to some kind of freak thats into that kind of thing, then who's gonna want to live there next? At least its not the Janesville police dept looking for the killer so it may be solved!!!!!!!!!!!!

momof1 I hope you never have to face a similar tragedy in you family. I would hate to wish that on to anyone.
I had a friend whose father shot her mom and then killed himself. Thank god her mom lived, but it was just horrible for her family to live in a place that was the sight of so much violence. They moved out as soon as they could into a apt. and sold their home. And yes their mortgauge company worked with them to help them out on the payments until the house was sold.
So next time before you make such a uncaring comment think but by the grace of god go I.

I'm sure that catching the killer is top on the list of her fiance, but it is also a important issue of his being able to move out of a place that holds terrible memories for him. Granted the first thing the landlord should have done was grant his request to break the lease. It would of been the moral thing to do right away no questions asked, and not wait for the court of public opinion to sway him into doing the right thing.
My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to her family and friends.

Momof1, if you had found someone that you loved dead in a place you had shared with them, would you want to go back to that place to live? He found her there. It was the right thing to do.

well, I guarantee you won't be let out of your mortgage payment because of this. I say get over it, there are bigger issues to tackle.

peacegirl, I hardly think what's in the paper affects the criminal investigation.
.
The landlord didn't outright refuse to do this last week. The WSJ story implied he was willing to work something out, but for unknown reasons was refusing to negotiate with the University, even though Gonnering had authorized them to represent him. So it was just a dumb way to invite bad publicity.
.
On the other hand, having heard first-hand tales of the student rental universe in Madison, I'm not sure he cares about bad publicity all that much ....

Keep in mind that on the news the other night, the landlord was saying that he would NOT be released out of his lease. I knew right then, that there would be an outcry by the public and rightly so. I am glad that he finally came to his senses.

It's good to know there are some compassionate people in the world. Kudos to the landlord for standing up and doing the right thing.

Absolutely the right thing to do. Some landlords can be complete jerks. This guy seems to have a heart, at least.
